My daughter’s hair has been a mess since she was a baby. She used to have this knotted ball that she slept on. It was almost like dreads. Her hair was always a bit uneven but we kept it since she was a girl and wanted her hair to grow out. She is now in preschool and her hair is below her shoulders. We tie her hair in a ponytail 99.9% of the time. It is still part dreadlock type messy hair and part frizzy hair.
For the record, we are Asian. My daughter is mixed Asian. When I was a kid, I had frizzy hair and my mom gave me some god awful perms. Eventually, I started getting Japanese straight perms. Can you recommend a good detangling shampoo and conditioner for my daughter? I have tried various conditioners and leave in conditioners. We have bought and have been gifted detangling brushes. |

My daughters hair is really prone to tangles too and we’ve tried various shampoos and conditioners that are specifically for detangling but none of them really work!
We also have a satin pillow case that she sleeps on, use detangling spray, and the special hairbrushes you mentioned. Honestly we haven’t found anything that works yet. Sorry I have no recommendations but just wanted to commiserate I guess. I hope you get some helpful replies. |
| Use a detangler spray and a wide tooth comb. Make sure you comb the snarls out before washing. Use a non drying shampoo (maybe skip the conditioner because it can make hair sticky) that doesn't raise the cuticle and rinse with cool/cold water if she can tolerate it. |

I’ve had really good luck with the Honest brand detangling spray. My daughter has straight hair, but she sleeps like a crazy person and it is often very messy in the morning. We spray a good amount on her head and brush after the bath, and again in the morning.
When her hair was longer I used Bumble and Bumble’s hair dressers oil. It worked well but was too expensive and occasionally too heavy for her hair. But that may be worth a shot too! |
Op here. I just ordered the bumble and bumble oil. I hope it works. I will probably also be able to use it too. My hair gets frizzy but it isn’t tangled the way my daughter’s hair is. |
So the baby hair knot has just turned into this tangled dread. it just continues to grow a tangled mess. Sigh. I don’t know if I should just cut it off. It is probably about 10-15% of her hair. Because of covid, we have never actually taken her to a salon. We trimmed her hair once to even her hair when she was a toddler and I recently trimmed her hair. I think I did a pretty good job minus the fact that her hair is still tangled. |
| I use Mustela shampoo and then put a few drops of argan oil on DD’s damp hair instead of conditioner. I wrap a towel around her hair and let it air dry. I bought this detangling brush on Amazon that works well: Crave Naturals Glide Thru. |
She needs a hair bonnet, or some other type of hair cover. These are par for the course in the AA community, but seems to be gaining traction in other cultures. Side note - I am AA, and used a satin pillowcase for YEARS to avoid snarling and tangling. I now cannot avoid tangles (regardless of how my hair is styled - braided, ponytail, etc) without covering my hair. You can detangle the knotted hair, but it will take some time (and maybe a few tries). Suave coconut is great for this - it has lots of "slip". Good luck! |

My daughter is mixed Asian/white, and she got much of my (mostly British) fine, wavy hair genes. It tangles like crazy. When she was your daughter’s age I brushed and braided it every morning and night and that was the only way to keep it tidy.
Now that she is older and won’t keep it in a braid, It develops that knot from being slept on. If she doesn’t brush it for a few days, it can take me up to an hour to pick apart the tangled mess. I have found that the Garnier Fructis Grow Strong line works wonders for smoothing and making it easy to brush when wet, which is the best way for her hair type to detangle it. Sometimes I can get her to let me braid it overnight after that, which is a big timesaver. |
| Babo Botanicals Primrose!!! |
| My son is also a tangle monster. Kinky Curly Knot Today conditioner is a product with great slip to use in shower/bath and combing through. And it is not just for curly hair! His is very fine, as is mine but I have more curl, and its been great for both of us. Adding a small dab after the shower and combing through again also seems to help keep his major knots at bay. |
| Can someone recommend a good comb to detangle hair? |
| You need to make sure you use a separate shampoo and conditioner (we use the purple J&J shampoo, I think it's "strength") plus a detangling spray (we use Paul Mitchell kids b/c my girls like the smell). |
| I'd also start getting her regular trims. My DD's hair tangles way less if she gets trims every few months, even if they just takeoff 1/2 an inch. |

This is the best detangling spray we have used, and I have tried probably 20 at this point. https://unitehair.com/products/7SECONDS-detangler?gclid=CjwKCAiA4KaRBhBdEiwAZi1zzkhfaiUhUawxeE7Ar1098rjoqG4kfvEfBiDkaRncrxGsCGscYCcEjhoC-MAQAvD_BwE
Sounds like a haircut is in order to get rid of the giant knot/mat in her hair now. If you don’t untangle it, it will just keep growing. My daughter has super thick, curly hair that tangles like crazy. I have taken to blow drying after a bath, with some of the detangler above and John freida frizz ease. You need silicone to create slippage. I don’t do a full blow out with a round brush to straighten it, but maybe 5/10 minutes just with my fingers gets it mostly dry and much straighter and easier to deal with. We also have to come it every day, at least once a day, because one the tangles start, they just get worse and worse. |
