MCPS wants $180 million more but is cutting teachers and counselors

Saw this report on the evening news tonight. MCPS is asking for $180 million more for next year’s budget but they are cutting teacher and counselor positions while increasing Central Office staff. Click on the video to hear the full report:

This is insane! What could their possible reasoning be for increasing central staff and decreasing the amount of staff with our children?

This is flipping ridiculous.
Work in the schools and see the need! Not a teacher, counselor, or para. They are necessities not wants! Wake up MCPS! Is this what the new Superintendent is promoting after her PR extravagance hire?!

This actually pisses me off so much after working In Person (not as a teacher, para, or counselor but in relation to) while Crntral Office couch surfed from home online. I’m disgusted. Everyone contact your unions.

Wow!!! I work in a HS and counselors are overworked and stretched thin. I can’t believe this!

My position at an elementary school is reading support and it's been cut for next year. So many students need that support- we were all rather shocked.

MCPS Central Office and BOE members suck. They should be ashamed of themselves.

I work in elementary and our counselor is stretched thin, we lost intervention hours, and our PreK students lost access to Esol services. But central needs more people?!?? You’ve got to be kidding me.

I’m so sorry to hear that. This is truly unbelievable.

So tone deaf by MCPS. How are they not aware that people are needed in the schools. Central office needs fewer people, not more.

Here’s the actual budget.

https://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/uploadedFiles/departments/budget/FY2023_RecommendedBudget_WholeBook.pdf

Look at page 16 of the budget, the “other salaries” section. What in the sam hill is the $96 MILLION increase in “other non position salaries” ?

The file is 431 pages long and will hopefully put me to bed dreaming of stupid budgets instead of stupid putin

Ya’ll are amazing. The Operating Budget plan has been available for review for 2 months including community comment. MCCPTA can barely get anyone to sit on the committee to review the budget. The BOR has had (3)Operating Budget hearings and (4) Work sessions to review every part of the operating budget, all of which are recorded so can still be reviewed. But, today after one article is published, one that seems barely researched, ya’ll have concern and complaint, and all without having reviewed said budget yourselves???

And folks wonder why America has problems.

I am going to make fifty more threads about greedy teachers and their unions.

Are you staying that the article is incorrect? That they are not adding 7 central staff positions? Nobody is reading an over 400 page budget. Of course we are going to rely on synopsis. But if the article is incorrect, please share your insight. I would truly appreciate it.
