TJ admissions decision - repercussions for Class of 2026

Anonymous
There's another thread where folks can debate the merits of the old and new admissions policy, level accusations of racism, etc. As the parent of a current applicant, what I want to know is what is likely to happen to the current applicants (the Class of 2026), who started the process months ago? There isn't realistically time to start a whole new admissions process. Isn't the thing to do to eliminate the experience factors (i.e. bonus points for being economically disadvantaged, an English language learner, or attending a historically underrepresented school) and evaluate the current applicants based on the remaining factors (i.e. GPA, student portrait sheet, problem-solving essay)?

No one on DCUM can answer your question. Just wait to see what they say next week.

I don't know the answer to your question. The order prohibited FCPS from using the 2020 TJHSST Admissions process. Who knows if they will appeal and if the 4th circuit would stay the order?

But possible one big wrinkle is that it appears that the Economically Disadvantaged experience factor is not being evaluated correctly. That might make the courts less inclined to stay the order for the class of 2026.

[This has already been discussed, but for those who did not know, it seems like anyone who answered yes to either of the meals questions is getting the 90-point experience factor. See this thread - https://www.dcurbanmom.com/jforum/posts/list/1018173.page]

No one knows.

Text of the order:

Here is the text of the order seems pretty clear that FCPS can no longer use the new admissions system. What that means on the ground is anyones guess. Also unclear 1) if they will appeal and 2) if they do appeal if the 4th circuit would issue a temporary stay over the district courts order.

"ORDERED that Plaintiff's Motion for Summary Judgment is GRANTED, Defendant's Motion for Summary Judgment is DENIED, and Defendant Fairfax County School Board is enjoined from further use or enforcement of the Fall 2020 Admissions Plan for the Thomas Jefferson High School for Science & Technology".

FCPS is looking into it according to the Washington Post article:

“ An attorney for Fairfax County Public Schools, John Foster, said Friday that he believes “the ruling is not supported by law.” He said Fairfax “will consider asking a federal appeals court to review the decision.”
Foster said officials were studying what the ruling will mean for how the school conducts admissions for the next cycle of TJ applicants, those destined for the Class of 2026.”

The decision on whether or not to appeal is not his. Just shut it down.

Or shut down TJ.

Yep. Just to spite some folks, we will shut down a top school and lower property prices, lower attractiveness of county to business. we will not try to solve the problems of how to maybe increase quality programs or help students and parents prepare better from lower classes. Destroy, destroy.

Yup. That's woke principle.

Here’s an idea! Everyone work hard and actually study. The best students regardless of race go to TJ. The new supreme court nominee MS. Jackson is proof the sky is the limit for bright, hard working students.

No one knows at this time. Prepare to have this decision late summer…that means at least 5 more months.

Yes, OP, that would be one option. FCPS could comply and revise its criteria. Another option would be an appeal to the Fourth Circuit and a request for a stay of the lower court’s order. Reasonable minds can differ as to whether that would be successful. It probably would be.

Here’s another idea: equal access to prep programs.
