I just finished sharp objects and I hated it. I hated all the characters! Why did so many people like this book? I enjoyed your other two.

It’s not my favorite genre and I can’t read too many of that kind of book but I like them in moderation.

I liked Gone Girl, the Girl on the Train, the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Rebecca.

Agree that all the characters are terrible, but it has me on edge the whole time. But I listened to the audio book, so maybe that made it better?

I’m pp, and I listened also. I wondered if the narrator made it worse, lol. Who knows.

These are older, but two I really like are Deep Impact by Lincoln Child (one of the Preston-Child authors; many of their joint works are also good, but this one by just Child is one of my favorites) and Mayday. I think there's a newer edition of Mayday but the one I've read is the original from the 70s (I think, or maybe early 80s). Pretty gripping. And yes I do sometimes take it along when I fly just for the extra frisson, LOL.

Five star reads:

- Old classic ghost story: Second Child by John Saul (any John Saul really)
- The Fourth Monkey trilogy by JD Barker (serial killer story)
- Jar of Hearts by Jennifer Hillier, also read The Butcher by the same author
- Verity by Colleen Hoover

I loathed this book with the heat of a thousand suns. So predictable and absurdly erotica-dominated, not to mention poorly written.

Hmm, these might not be full-on thrillers, but in the more suspenseful mystery category, I enjoyed recently:

Dream Girl (and other Laura Lippman books in general)
Lock Every Door, Riley Sager
The Dry, Jane Harper (all her books are great)
Vicious, VE Schwab (and the sequel Vengeful)

Gentleman and players

The Frieda Klein series (psychiatrist turned reluctant detective)

I’m currently reading the plot (once promising now washed up author protagonist/setting is second tier mfa program)

What She Knew: Gilly MacMillan
The Chestnut Man: Soren Sveistrup

For Sager books I enjoyed Home Before Dark the most. It had a nice spooky atmospheric quality.

I have not read his most recent, Survive the Night.

Anything by Ruth Ware

I liked Something in the Water and Catherine Steadman's other books. I was surprised to learn, when I was looking up her name, that there are discussion questions for thrillers. Like, why?
