| I went to Cal. So many people don’t make it to second semester that they have a whole new admittance category for January freshman starts. |
| The attrition rate is also heavily tied to family income. Look at the top schools on that list. I'd bet the few kids who do drop out are low-income students. |
Or it could be that college simply wasn't for them. People's brains don't all work the same either. |
Money isn't the only factor when it comes to dropping out of college. Other factors such as maturity, work ethic, natural intelligence, strength of character, etc. are also important. Believe it or not, what kind of person you are is more important than how rich or poor your family is. |
Pregnancy too. It happens. |

OP, I attended a LAC in the early '80s. The attrition rate increased sharply starting sophomore winter as Reagan decimated the budget and many classmates lost financial aid or access to other programs allowing them to attend college. Then another group of people left over junior year as Reagan's cuts had "trickled down" to state budgets and those states retrenched their aid for higher ed.
Absent that, the attrition rate would have been much lower, largely reflecting individual, rather than national, circumstances. |
At the UC schools & Penn State and particular, a lot of the disadvantaged students don’t arrive on campus until Year 3. |
College isn’t for everyone. |
| <90% retention is a red flag to me |
Your kid better be a good student then because you’re going to have to rule out the vast majority of schools. |
