Do any of the Girls JV teams at WJ not have cuts (or not many). Cross county? VolleyBall? Track?
I juts have no idea how many girls try out for sports and how many make the teams. Do they have rec or club options as a separate league? |

Cross Country and Indoor/Outdoor Track are no cut, they just expect perfect attendance and select the best runners to go to the meets.
Soccer is probably the most competitive sport for cuts for girls. Otherwise, it varies considerably as to how competitive the sports are. In many instances the most competitive athletes may be JV age, but they want varsity placement, leaving some room on JV. |

WJ Crew is no cut. It's not a school-sponsored sport but a club sport. The great thing about crew is that (with very, very few exceptions) kids don't start rowing until 9th grade because they aren't tall enough. All the kids start from the same level and lots of them come from other sports because they didn't make the team or didn't want the pressure.
It's a fall and spring sport. My son rowed all four years (his senior year season got canceled because of covid, sadly) and the discipline and fitness it gave him was incredible. It's a lot -- practice 4-5 days a week after school and on Saturdays -- but there's a lot of team cohesion and support and it's so much fun to go to regattas. The drawback is that it's not cheap because it's not school-supported. |
| Anyone have any info on girls' tennis at WJ? |
| There aren't many rec or club sports tightly connected to WJ. The PP mentioned crew. Otherwise, most of the rec/club are community based, rather than school. |
| I have heard good things about track and cross country. Anyone know what season it is? Ive also seen a lot of interest in volleyball so I am guessing that may be hared than it used to be. |
| Interesting thread. I'd like to know how the volleyball teams work - I know there is varsity and JV, but I think there are also rec teams - any info on those (and how competitive they are) would be appreciated. I have a kid who is new to the sport and feels a little intimated by the whole thing. |
| Would love to hear about volleyball as well. |
Cross country is fall, indoor track is winter and outdoor track is spring. My kids ran and really enjoyed it. |
And indoor track is only indoors for a handful of meets. Practice is all outdoors. |
| When is volleyball? |
Girls Volleyball is a fall sport. Boys volleyball is spring. |
| Is volley ball competitive to make the team? |
Girls has cuts. If DD has played club, she'll be fine. Otherwise, it depends on the year. Softball probably has the fewest cuts of girls sports. Volleyball I would say for boys though JV football isn't super heavy on cuts. That's excluding club and corollary sports. Soccer and lacrosse are the big killers for both sexes. |
| For fall cross country, do practices start before school? How do rising 9th graders learn about it? |
