HL/SLs, and AP at RMIB

Was looking through the course requirement for the RMIB diploma, and we are a little confused if HL is needed in English OR History?

If a student turns out to be more STEM oriented, is there a way to do the three HLs in Chemistry, Physics and Math rather than History or English?

At our local W-school, most of the high achieving students seem to be taking anywhere between 10-16 APs. Given that RMIB kids need to take IB tests, do they just end up taking significantly less AP tests than their peers at the local school, or just as much? If so, wouldn't that require a lot of self-studying? TIA

Most IB classes prepare the students for the AP assessments.

I do not believe it is possible in RMIB program to take only 6 IB.

RMIB expects all diploma candidates to HL in English (even STEM focused students.) You must take HL tests in 2 or 3 other subjects and then SL in 3 or 2 subjects, for a total of 6 tests, one per subject area. You may take additional IB tests, but will pay an additional fee.

Most students in IB take the corresponding AP tests too. They also often have AP only classes and take those tests. Some students self study a topic and take the test without having taken the course. 10-16 AP tests is not uncommon, in addition to the 6 IB tests.

Why? I have a child in the program and I don't know why I should bother paying for 10-16 AP tests?

You don’t have to. AP exams are not required for IBD.

Also, 10-16 is hyperbole. WJ Apex requires 9, for example.

HL English is required. Your child can take up to 4 HL exams (and 2 SL exams, for a total of 6 IB exams), or 3 HL exams and 3 SL exams. So yeah, your child can take HL English, Chem, Physics, and Math, but it won't be fun!

DD is struggling with getting the APs in, as she feels inferior bc she simply can't handle the amount of work and studying on top of IB requirements and ECs.

My STEM leaning DC is taking IB Physics and IB comp sci.

Junior this year -- 4 APs
Soph and Freshman year -- 1 AP each.
Senior year will probably take an additional 2 or 3 APs.

So total 9 APs maybe and 6 IBs.

IBs also count towards college credit, depending on the college and score, IB diploma can earn anywhere from 18 to 24 semester credits. May have changed recently, but that's the last I saw in 2018.

Do NOT self study for a bunch of APs. Sorry for the stereotype, but it makes the college admissions offices think you are a grind and have no interests outside of school. Take a rigorous load and then spend any extra time on a job or activities, not more APs.
