Republican/Democrat society?

Anonymous
I ended up in the ballet coronavirus thread and that was a trip. I saw a few references to “DC Republican society” in there and was surprised that such a thing exists, given the transient nature of DC and politics, and that it was presented as something to aspire to. Is that a real thing? I assume the Democrats have their own counterpart? I’m not from the area, but it all seems rather silly.

Yes it exists - in Chevy Chase area. Lots of people that have either been here their whole lives or others that have moved in and gone to private high school/prep school or college with them. Remember the "Women for Kavanaugh" group? That's them.

Yep DC republicans are fun and friendly. I’m a democrat and enjoyed hanging out with them. I’m in different circles now.

Oh interesting; I didn't realize that it's so hyper-local. I was aware that political affiliation groups existed, I didn't realize they're more insular here; I interpreted the ballet thread as referring to there being some long-standing Republican social hierarchy.

14:35 is right, I've met fun friendly people on both sides of the aisle here.

It’s not just Chevy Chase, it’s parts of upper NW, it’s Kalorama, its Georgetown, it’s Mass Ave Heights, it’s McLean. It’s wherever the money is, there’s going to be a subset of Republican think tankers and lobbyists and lawyers even in a very Democratic area.

Then this will surprise you too: Many of us, who have families who have lived here for several generations, do not view or experience DC as transient. Some have long-standing interests in politics, and want to be involved with others who share similar interests. I’m not sure why this would seem silly — even to someone not from the area. Transients also have interests, even if their commitment to such interests is limited by their relative transience.

For sure. I’m old now (40) but when I was young in DC we used to hang out with senators kids etc.
I feel like the Rs hung out at smith point?? Or at least the preps.

That is MD. The only GOP enclave I know of in DC is a handful in the greater Wesley Heights area.

Agree. But fortunately most of these Republicans are fairly moderate. Very few MAGA idiots. Lifelong CC resident and Democrat.

Anyone still a Republican after the last 5 years is a MAGA idiot, whether they voted for him or not.

Only 10 Republicans voted to impeach Trump despite his blatant and brazen crimes. Those Republicans were censured, insulted, and ostracized from the party. Republicans continue to downplay Trump's violent insurrection and illegally stonewall a legitimate investigation. The entire spineless party acquiesced to Trump's every whim. To this day absolutely none of them will speak out against his presumed 2024 candidacy. If you vote red, you are a MAGA idiot, plain and simple. At least have the courage and conviction to own it.

+1 to all of this, especially the bolded.

There were a couple Trump intern/staffer bars near Nats Park. Real DC is much different than social media DC.

Yes, Navy Yard/the Southwest Waterfront is the new gathering place for young professional DC Republicans. All of the future Ann Coulters and George Conways get their drinks there now.
