San Francisco voters oust three school board members in recall vote

Anonymous
"Three San Francisco School Board members were removed from their positions by voters on Tuesday, CNN projects, following a tough recall campaign that pitted Democrats against Democrats as interlocking controversies over school closings and renamings fueled a well-funded backlash.

The successful effort in one of the country's most liberal cities is likely to embolden Republicans who have channeled parental anger over school reopenings and mask mandates into a powerful wedge issue, including last fall in Virginia. For Democrats, especially those making decisions in blue states, the vote highlighted internal divisions over how to handle the pandemic as cases decline but the threat of another surge looms."

This doesn't bode well for FCPS board members.

It reflects that the Democratic party has more moderates then the Republican Party, this is a point missed by the Progressive Democrats and sinks the party in a good number of elections.

It is insane to remove them. You cannot separate the movement for social justice from public education.

Diane Feinstein supports the confederate flag and she tried to create a monument to war and violence in the SF bay.

I can’t speak for OP. But my guess is:

- the FFX school board has abandoned academics over pushing their own radicalized political ideas.

- the FFX school Board is also hostile to AAP and accelerated learning. For example: they advocate for E3 instead of accelerated classes, they attacked the TJ admission program, and they support the VMPI revisions (which the VA DOE is trying to sneak through under the 7-year required revision of SOL, despite the governor’s EO against VMPI).

Remember, the entire gifted and talented program was eliminated in NYC by folks who hold the same radicalized views as our current school board.

Interestingly Youngkin may end up with a more direct way to kill VMPI:

Three of those blocked appointees included interim members of the Virginia Board of Education, who had spent months — and, in one case, years — serving while waiting on the General Assembly to officially confirm their nomination. One, Anthony Swann, was appointed in early 2021 after being named Virginia’s Teacher of the Year.
...
It’s the Board of Education that has final say over the state’s Standards of Learning, the minimum expectations for what students are expected to learn in every subject at every grade level. Members can also independently initiate and consider changes to those standards, including a recent effort to rethink math education in Virginia.

Republicans argued that the initiative would lower educational standards, and Youngkin already ordered Jillian Balow, his recently appointed state superintendent of public instruction, to end the program in his first executive order. But the board has oversight, and final approval, over a broad range of policy options, from a proposal to consolidate standard and advanced diplomas to the state’s model policy on the treatment of transgender students, which local school districts are required to adopt.

I think the whole kerfluffle over nominees was a stupid political stunt that is going to continue to bite both parties as they each dig in on power grabs, but I sure won't mourn over not just the letter but the spirit of VMPI getting destroyed.

Because one of the key issues was converting a merit school (Lowell) to a lottery school, and one of the recalled board member (Alison Collins) talking down and making discriminatory remarks about Asian Americans.

I’m in the SF Bay Area and this was widely supported. Alison Collins in particular is extremely unpopular. She also has posted anti Asian things on Twitter, filed an $87 million frivolous suit against the school district that was dismissed, and in the meantime has been violating city building permit laws right and left, so much so that there was a 103 page report with all the details. She is a corrupt mess.
