Your suggesting unprepped 50 percentile and after prepping jump to 80 percentile? That too big a jump, I would think. |
If, under the old scoring, prepping increases the score by 20 PTS, that would be from 60% to 80 %. Raw score of 100 to 120. |
Athletes love to compete. In sports it's not about who is the fastest or strongest. The player who knocks the other out is the winner. The entitled prefer self-annointment. They fear competition. They fear those who prepare. They are afraid of getting knocked out. I prefer a world with opportunity for both the Davids and the Goliaths.
Now, let's here the driveling whine that life is not about winning, Big 3, Ivy and BMW and there are no prizes in life. It all about cum ba ya ya. |
A poster is quite obsessed with knocking people out, people stealing the "prize", convinced that the so-called "entitled" are out to deny opportunity to others. This poster is advocating "test prep" as a means to knock out others before they knock you out, to steal the prize before someone else can, to trick the "entitled" at their own game.
The problem is that people that think the world is out to get them will only see evidence of that all around them. They assume that if they are willing to trick people that others must be trying to trick them. Luckily, we are in the US where there is plenty of opportunity for all the Davids and all the Goliaths. There is no need to for knock outs or tricks to do well in the US. Most people in the US treat others fairly and honestly and can expect to be treated the same way in return. Sure, there are dishonest people, but they are not the majority and the dishonest are not respected by those that know them. |
Nobody really cares if this poster is Asian, Hispanic, black, or white. |
^ well I was in Beijing not too long ago. Lined up in a queue for a taxi, and the people behind me did not observe any decorum whatsoever. Pushing, shoving, ignoring the line - trying their best to get ahead. Because for some that's what it all about right? And you may be in their way. I would still be there today if I hadn't pushed back. So maybe there's a lesson there. Hope not. |
I have flown into airports in three different major US cities in the past few months and when I went to the taxi stand, even though it was crowded, everyone stood in line and waited their turn. I even saw a young single man allow a woman with children and a carseat go ahead of him. |
It depends. The player can later be disgraced for cheating. Barry Bonds may have the home run crown, but we know it is because of PEDS. Your analogy only applies if everyone plays by the rules. Batting Practice: good prep. Studying the pitching history good prep. Injecting yourself with HGH: cheating. You probably cheat on your taxes too. Because money is the ultimate goal. Guess what? Money don't matter when you are dead. The poor, the rich are all dead in the end. I guess I do not have the wherewithal to compete...the US, our great entitled nation...entitled because of what? Not our heritage. Most immigrants came here because they had no where else to go. That does not sound entitled. My grandparents came here with just the clothes on there backs. They worked hard so there kids could go to college. These children worked hard so there kids could go to college. And my generation is working hard: scientists, engineers, doctors, and lawyers...so our kids can have a better life. But life is not money. No amount of money will cure the cancer in ones body....ask Steve Jobs. |
What is the obsession with Asian's about on this thread? You can't go more than one or two pages at the very most without them being mentioned in some derogatory way or another. Oh, wait. I know. Never mind...

From another thread, but appropriate here:
|
It is the same poster who is obsessed with living in the right zip code so that her children can attend the best schools, play lacrosse and crew in preparation for the Ivy or SLAC prize. If her children do not do well at lacrosse (hard not to do for essentially non athletes) she will put them in squash or water polo. The poster knows this is the easiest route for average entitled kids to get to Ivys and SLAC ( with little competition) who must fill their eights and athletic rosters. Academic stars in every American zip code today largely do not play these club sports! |
Please don't give way our secrets. We don't want everyone getting into hockey, squash, crew, swimming, and lacrosse at any early age and taking our slots. |
Um, this is not the real estate board. This thread is not about living in any particular zip code. It's a thread about a test that second graders take, not about how to get into college.
Whether or not kids are in the AAP will have no effect on what college they get into. Lots of school systems have no AAP or GT and they send students on to great colleges. It's not like college admissions people look at an application and say, " Horrors! no AAP? Well, then we just cannot accept little Johnny!" |
If a child doesn't get into AAP we know this may not ultimately affect getting to MIT or Stanford in the long run. But, I know few families turning down AAP for the opportunity of using the general education route to those ends. I know of none.
I do know some who turn down TJ or magnet in favor of neighborhood school. The calculation in most cases, the latter is too competitive and a stellar grade point average better preserved with the latter option. This represents the bulk of the discussions I have held with such kids and families over the last decade. |
I see. So there may be a prize in the long run. |
