This is for the mom's who have have had their kid in daycare from infancy through 2 years old or are in it now. Has the mask wearing of the teachers/ caregivers been ok for your child? I am looking for some reassurance/positive stories. i feel for all of you who have been dealing with this. I am extremally covid cautious and all for masks and doing good by society- I have high risk parents who live near by that I want to protect at all costs.. But I just feel concerned naturally. I also get that parents have been battling this for two years now and I am new to the party - I am sure there are tons of posts, but for whatever reason I am not finding them.
I am putting my soon to be 13 month old in the sweetest inhome - so excited about the level of care, the amazing woman running it and for the socialization he'll get (he is so outgoing and sweet with new people..so far). But I am so worried about him not being able to see smiles and not see their mouths moving when learning words. Not only will daycare be a big transition for him going from part time nanny and me who works from home, (we have no choice to do full time because we are going back to work) but itll be that on top of not being able to see his caregivers face. And like what will this do for language development and reading ques during this pre reading/ on the cusp of talking time. The kids wont be wearing masks, however - aged 6 months - 2. I dont have other financial options besides this, so I am looking to hear from the working moms will full time care. Is your little one doing ok? Have they still thrived? |
We have noticed a significant delay in speech as well as articulation problems. My DD has been examined by the city for early intervention and diagnosed with more than 20% delay. The therapist noted she was seeing a significant increase in speech problems in the 2-4 age range and there aren’t enough providers to render services. I have an older child too who was at the same daycare precovid who did not suffer from a delay or any speech impediments.

ok ....well we dont really have a choice. |
Pp here. Neither do we so we muddle on. Just sharing our experience. If anything there are others out there feeling the same things. Our kids remain in daycare as We can’t afford other options |
Speech delay will obviously be an issue, but it is what it is. You do the best you can. |
why is it "obviously" an issue? On the contrary I have heard from folks within the past 20 min that it has not been an issue with their child at all. So you never know (a diff post). |
How do you suppose toddlers learn to speak? |
Some kids just have speech delays. You cannot blame it on masks when you don't mask at home. |
Then why isn’t every single toddler presenting with a speech delay? |
Some people who smoke don't develop lung cancer. Which obviously means smoking doesn't cause cancer after all. s/ SMH |
Do you have the data on this ? Doubt it |
As in - the data about speech delays from masking or is this just your expert insight |
+1 My toddler presented with a speech delay PRE covid and masking. (he is no longer a toddler). Turns out is was ASD. |
My son was home from (roughly 13 months to 18 months) when daycare closed in spring 2020. Around 18 months we started him in early intervention b/c he wasn't talking yet. Being back at school (verses home with an older sister and parents who could understand what he wanted or needed without him having to use many words, plus having some babysitter hours but often being home with two parents trying to work). Once he was back in daycare (with masked teachers of course), his language took off over the second half of 2020. The zoom speech therapy was pretty worthless, i think it was really either just developmental or being back in school was so helpful for him. |
There are two questions here: 1. Is it a reasonable hypothesis that masks could case speech delays or issues with social development. You seem to think it is not because some children don't have speech delays. I do think it is a reasonable hypothesis, and so do experts. If you google this topic you will find studies showing that that it is hard for children to discern people's emotions when they are wearing a mask. Some experts say any harms will go away quickly once masks go away, but they cannot possibly know that. This is a huge experiment we are conducting with young children. 2. Is there proof that masks cause speech delays or issues with social development? No, there is not, everyone on this thread knows this. A lack of data does not mean that the people who are certain that masks don't cause harm are correct. |
