In other news, apps for 9th are way up this year

I had a conversation with a Big3 admissions director earlier this week b/c a family member is moving to DC. Apps are quote: "really, really high this year". Other grades are "quieter" (this family has two kids).
So I guess $50K is not going to be a problem for the schools.

As a “big 3” family, I’ve been around long enough to hear the same thing, that applications are up every year.

It’s probably true but are the increases in line with or above general increases in the population of 14 year olds?

agreed. but i think this was actually valid as it was said in the context of "your friends may have some luck in grade X but grade 9 apps are way up this year".

Isn’t the admissions folks job to talk up the school? I think you’re reading too much into it.

why would they discourage people from applying to 9th? When asked the question: "should our friends submit an application to 9th, the response was:. "no, there is no point. applications are are way up".
Then question two: How about grade XX? The answer was: "someone moving from out-of-town might have a shot at that grade. we're busy but nothing like 9th. There could be an outside chance".

Covid has been driving apps to private school. Likely true.

Hasn’t the application deadline already passed? Why encourage people to apply late?

I have no doubt the admission person said this. How “really, really high” they actually are is a matter of some interpretation, I would suspect. The AOs have every incentive to make sure current parents know just how sought after their spots are. That’s not to say apps are’t way up; they may be. Just consider your source.
