Desperately in need of a tutor!!!!!!

Anonymous
Hey,

Does anyone know of a good math tutor?. My son was in an accelerate math class this year(3rd grade). I felt that it was too advance, but his teacher disagreed. I should have relied on my own judgement. He does not know his "math facts, regrouping etc..." We need help!!!, any suggestions.

Thanks

21:15 here - kumon (Bethesda location) not only saved my DD, she went from struggling with math to being consistently recognized as being strong in math after going to kumon for less than a year. We just continued the kumon approach after she stopped going to the classes.

Does Kumon offer one-on-one instruction?.

I'm an ex-math teacher and used to tutor when I was in college and in my first few years of teaching (when I was earning so little!). One option would be to find a local college that trains math teachers and call/email the lecturers to get a recommendation for a good student to tutor in your home.

9:06 no there isn't individual tutoring it's a program but it saved my son in Fourth Grade and now he's in middle school, one of the strongest in his class in math. Kumon starts takes students back to the foundation and reviews addition and subtraction and builds on that. It's self-directed, your daughter would do exercises every day at home then you go to the center once a week. My friend, a teacher at a top DC private, used it for her child, too!

On the tutor: They can be great for older students (middle school and up) but many of them do not know how to deal with ES students and that's Kumon's specialty! If you get a private tutor OP make sure it's someone who's worked with younger students before.

Yes. KUMON!

otherwise id contact a lower school math teacher at one of the Big 3 then ask if they are interested in tutoring.

For 4th-grade math you do not need to hire a Big-3 math teacher as a tutor. You would be paying $35 to $50 an hour when a junior-high or high-school student who is a math whiz could do as good a job and charge only $10 to $15 an hour.

If you're interested in saving some money, my son is an 8th-grader on the math competition team at one of the Big 3 (not naming the school here, so as not to give too much personal info online; please understand). He has tutored his peers at school, though free of charge, but with excellent results. He would be interested in tutoring during the summer. If you're interested, please let me know.

Kumon stresses the basic facts which many curricula do not. These facts should be learned IN CLASS. What are we paying for? This crazy advancement of students is a mess.

I strongly agree!!!!!!. What is wrong with being your best "on grade level".

But even without the advancement problem, EDM does not stress learning math facts, which is the reason we ended up at Kumon. I agree these facts should be taught in class and practiced at home, but if the curriculum does not offer it and you don't take matters into your own hands, your child could fall seriously behind in math and catching up becomes more and more difficult with each year that passes. In the end, it's worse to spend the money and discover that your kid cannot be competitive in math by fourth or fifth grade.
