would you drive a luxury car that marks you as an outsider?

I own a Lexus. I currently live somewhere that is near 2 Lexus dealerships, in a neighborhood where a Lexus is fairly normal (not in DMV). But I'm relocating for a new job in a smaller town several states away. The closest Lexus dealership is 5 hours away in another state. I feel like the car will mark me as NOT FROM HERE. It's also 9 years old at this point. WWYD? Trade in for an unassuming Toyota, or keep it a few more years and just live with sticking out like a sore thumb?

It’s a Lexus not a zonda, no one will care

So you're one of those people who always take their car to the dealership?

Ha ha ha.

Why are you complicating your life, OP? Just move with your car, and buy another one when it eventually dies. Get it serviced at whatever local garage is most honest (often not the dealership). Easy.

Why does everyone have to be a snide, superior jerk on DCUM? Did I say I get it serviced at the dealer? No. I was just making the point that no one owns one in New Location because there isn't anywhere to buy one. That's all.

Grow up. Why do you care what others think? If they all drove VWs, does that mean you need one too? What are you, two?

In a place where most people aren't wealthy, I'm afraid of being targeted because the car "looks wealthy". I'm also a single woman, so maybe I am more concerned about safety than you are, and a POC whose ethnic group has been the target of crimes lately. There's no need to belittle me (then why did I post on DCUM, right? The whole point of this site is to belittle people and feel superior, so thanks for that).

A Lexus is just an assuming Toyota.

I would worry more about whether you'll be able to find parts quickly when it eventually needs servicing.

I think you mean a pretentious Toyota.

I’m a POC female who would not be concerned about this.

This would never cross my radar. Do you like the car? Keep driving it. When you’re in the market for a new car, presumably you won’t buy another one if the closest dealership is 5 hours away.

You're overthinking things. You WILL be an outsider when you first move, and WON'T be from there. There's nothing wrong with that. Own your choices. All of them.

I don’t think a Lexus IS that conspicuous, especially 9 years old. I live in a neighborhood with mostly “normal” cars, and I’ve thought a lot about how if I got a fancy car, it would be really odd in this neighborhood. But I’m thinking like a shiny Audi or a Tesla or something. There are a couple people around here with older luxury sedans and they’re not flashy cars that stick out. Also, I don’t think that Lexus logo or look is very noticeable - for some reason Lexuses just don’t stick out to me.

I hear you.

Sure. Trade it in for a car that won’t stand out.

If you're ready for a new car, get a Toyota. It's basically the same car and you won't have this worry.

If your Lexus is still serving you well, keep it. Don't wash it often and no one will think you're rich with a ten year old dirty car.
