Older with Low Miles vs. Newer with High(er) Miles??

Anonymous
My son had his vehicle deemed a total loss this morning by his insurance co.# so now he will have to purchase a used vehicle.

He had been predicting this outcome for the past week and has been looking at used car websites.

He asked me if it was better to purchase an older car with lower miles or a newer car with higher miles if both vehicles were about the same price range.

I told him I would buy the vehicle less driven but his Father told him a newer model due to it having more modern, and thus safer features.

What do you guys think??

I think you need to give us more details - what year, how many miles, which maker, which model...etc. Short answer is "it depends"...

+1. You also shouldn't fall into the trap of believing that a low mileage vehicle is in great shape. People often think of the little old lady cars as great options because they are low mileage, but sitting can also be harder on cars than highway miles. If you are talking about a car that is only a few years old, it probably won't make a difference, but if it's 8-10 years old you might run into a number of problems that you might not expect.

Good luck your son. Car shopping, especially used, is terrible right now. You might consider new or some short-term options, if that's feasible.

What kind of miles?

Of identical vehicles, a one year old car with 50k highway miles is a lot better than 3 year old car with 15k city miles.

no way to tell highway Vs city miles. kinda like saying it was driven by a little old lady. you just don know.

personally. same make/ same model only difference is miles and age.

Id go with fewer miles every time assuming both models have all the same options and features.

down side its aways a trade-off no two cars mode's option will ever be the same.

the only other factor for me would if there i any factory warranty remaining.
