| Been eyeing some expensive handbags lately, but I'm a little hesitant to pull the trigger because let's face it, I don't live a glamorous, designer lifestyle. For those of you with expensive purses, how much do you baby them? Do you take care to not let your kids' sticky fingers touch them, leave them at home in inclement weather, and not put them where a waitress may accidentally dump food in them (I've seen it happen -- not pretty!)? |
| I like my LV NF (Damier Azure) bc I don’t have to baby it. My kids are older so I don’t have to worry about sticky fingers. If I’m in inclement weather, I use an umbrella, leave it hidden in my car. I don’t worry about putting it on a clean spot on the floor of restaurant or wherever. I keep it out of the way of spills. |
| I have an expensive to me bag. I don’t baby it. I figure I should use the things I love. But I didnt get it until my kids were older. |
| I don’t baby them at all. Life is for living. |
That's...not the type of designer handbag we're talking about here. |

I don’t have one but did you see the thread about who pays when a friend’s dog eats the purse?
Also, as an internet confession….I was once at a back to school night that was packed to the gills in the cafeteria. I’d come straight from work so was eating one of the snacks provided by the PTA. Something jostled me and I dropped it….right into the designer purse of the woman next to me, who had left it right under me (next to her). I debated saying something but didn’t know her, she looked a little snooty, and it was super loud so I thought it would be hard to make myself heard. But at least it wasn’t a coke or a red wine. Personally, I don’t like to have anything that I use frequently that I would be upset if it was damaged. Even my car—if it gets scratched in a parking lot, I’m not that upset. |
NP but is a $1600 bag not considered designer? What type of bag are you talking about? |
| Well, for one thing, I never let my houseguests poop in it. There’s an old Neverfull (which FIL takes as a personal challenge) upstairs for that. |
NP It is. The PP is being a snot. |

I'll bite -
I have a few basic non$$ bags that I don't worry about at all - Tory Burch, Kate Spade, even a Gucci Jackie. But I also have a Chanel Boy Bag that I store in its dust bag, in the box. When I use it, I'm careful but not weird about it. I use it quite a bit, but when I get home I make sure it's cleaned out (no pens or makeup) and put away. That bag makes me happy and it took me a long time to get it. |
I don't consider a bag that the 25 year olds that I work with carry a designer handbag, no. Those bags are going out to the bar after work, no, not being babied! |
|
It depends on the bag. My LV NF Kusama I use for just about every day, put it down anywhere, don't pay much attention to it, etc. Same for any of my LV bags in Epi leather - they are close to indestructible, as is my Tod's tote bags. My Hermes Trim Chevre is super sturdy, but a little bit on the smaller side for everyday use, since I'm a packrat. My Victoria II is Clemence, so it's a bit softer and I'm more careful with that. I don't have a Kelly yet, but I'd love a box leather one except they require babying and can't get wet.
Any bags with lighter colors, I'm more careful. I have an old LV Alma Stephen Sprouse and I baby it because it dings easily and is predominantly white. I don't collect Chanel - I think they are mostly lambskin and I'll ruin that in a week. Anything with "buttery" leather, I'll destroy it. I may as well set the money on fire. |
| Any time someone is about to breath within two feet of it, I spray hand sanitizer in their mouths. Anyone who wants to touch my bags must put on surgical gloves. The children are not allowed to leave the kitchen or playroom without being first hosed down with a bleach mixture by the nanny. |

Avoid Louis Vuitton vachetta if you don’t want water spots or patina.
