Looks like Youngkin is trying to kill VMPI. But the VDOE is mandated by the General Assembly to update the math curriculum every seven years.
How's that going to work? How are they going to comply with the law if Youngkin kills the effort to update the curriculum? https://www.governor.virginia.gov/media/governorvirginiagov/governor-of-virginia/pdf/74---eo/74---eo/EO-1---ENDING-THE-USE-OF-INHERENTLY-DIVISIVE-CONCEPTS,-INCLUDING-CRITICAL-RACE-THEORY,-AND-RESTORING-EXCELLEN.pdf Accordingly, pursuant to the authority vested in me as the Chief Executive Officer of the Commonwealth, and pursuant to Article V of the Constitution and the laws of Virginia, I hereby order the following: "8. The Superintendent of Public Instruction shall end the Virginia Math Pathways Initiative. " |
He’s already governing by fiat, I doubt he cares. |
I thought Republicans were supposed to be the law and order party. Guess they’re dropping to law part of that. What does that leave us with? Order, as defined by Republican dictators? This is so NOT the part of Ronald Reagan. |
Ugh, I bought where I did in Virginia for the public schools, but given Youngkin seems determined to kill them, I'd better start looking at private schools. |
Might want to move schools are not the only issue |
I hope it really is dead |
As a math teacher, I hope he ends it. We were dreading it and many of us were looking into early retirement before the changes took place. It was not good. Parents were in an uproar over this but now that Youngkin chimes in they are for it? You should be rejoicing. |
Thank You! He can certainly make positive changes --for example also roll back the changes that made getting PASS easier and PASS ADVANCED harder on SOLS. |
Plenty of math teachers and professors were supportive of offering data and statistics classes and changing the possible paths. They already backed off the initial idea of limiting access to advanced classes and what was left was a nice modernization of math offerings. The curriculum review is required by law but I am sure Youngkin and his MN and WY education appointments have no idea what is required by VA law. |
VMPI is disastrous for public schools. It’s a very good thing that he is getting rid of it.
To the pp that was lamenting about just buying in a good school district and now going to have to look at private. You should send him an email to thank him. He just saved your good public school. |
Interesting. The people who were working on the initiative are VA math teachers. I guess some are more set in their "old ways" than others? |
Why - because blending algebra & geometry and adding data science was really that terrible? |
I’m not going to agree with Youngkin on much (and I didn’t vote for him), but I’m glad he’s doing this. Dumbing down math in the name of equity would have been a disaster, and while folks have been backpedaling on that, the entire process now seems tainted to me. |
Stop peddling GOP propaganda. They weren't dumbing down math. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
Except that’s not what was happening. In many respects it was going to make the math curriculum more rigorous. |
