Going to a college basketball game (George Mason) as an "away team" fan

Anonymous
I've only ever been to "home games" as a college basketball fan. Next weekend, a team I want to see (University of Dayton) will be playing George Mason.
It looks like there are a lot of tickets still available. Is there a certain section that "away team fans" usually sit in? I know that George Mason requires a mask be worn, I don't see anything about proof of vaccination.
Anything else I should know? Thanks!

I don't know about George Mason, but there was an away team fan section at UMD when I went to see my alma mater (also bball). I assume there would be for GMU too.

Similar experience with Georgetown. We have gone to many games over the years and been for our team. We have always sat in our section and cheered for our team. I’m not sure of your question. Are you worried there won’t be other away fans present?

Thanks! Yeah, I've been googling but can't find which section that would be.

I don't think George Mason promotes anything fun, not fun like a cheering section for the Away Team Fans. It's not really the place to get the college experience.

OP here
No, I'm pretty sure there will be--I know Dayton has very dedicated alumni. My son is considering going to college there so that's why we want to go to the game.

I was just thinking if there were a lot of Dayton fans sitting near each other, we might prefer to sit there, rather than in a huge crowd of Mason fans.

GMU is a great place to see a game. We have gone as visitors a couple of times. Liked it so much we went to a couple of regular season games.

The band is really fun. Doubt there will be a true visitor section, but you will see alumni from your school if they are there. It's a really fun atmosphere. No bad seats anywhere.

When we went the band had a strings section! Not sure if that’s changed with Covid, but I thought it was awesome!

Op, I’d see if there’s a phone number for the box office. They should be able to tell you what seats are best for Dayton fans.

OP I just googled “ dayton alumni dc” and see your alumni club has something planned. Check it out.

I'm a UD alum. We got an email about the game but there was no instruction on which section to sit in. I also am a GMU alum (masters) and go to alot of their games. I'm usually cheering for GMU, but this is the one game where I pull out my Dayton swag. The "main" visitors section at the arena is 103. 107 and 110 tend to also have alot of visitors. The Mason students sit in 123 and 124. If you'd like to attend the pre-game event, it's from 5:00-6:30pm at Oh George! UD alum are extremely friendly and would love to meet/convince your DS to become a Flyer!

Thank you so much! This is very helpful! We've been watching the basketball games on tv and I'm always impressed with how many Dayton fans make it out to the away games (especially the tournament in Florida!)

Usually the only dedicated away team section is behind the visitors’ bench where the friends and family of the team and boosters sit. Otherwise in NCAA division 1 games the general public sits disbursed around the arena. Sometimes alum associations do group tickets.

You should be fine though sitting anywhere. I’m a Tar Heel who’s seen games at Cameron, wearing all my UNC gear. If I can make it out alive (no one bothered me at all) anyone can be a visitor at any game anywhere.

The last game I saw pre covid was UR against Dayton. Dayton usually has a great team.

I have wanted to go when GMU has played my alma mater (Penn) - but I haven't made it. I never once didn't go because I was concerned for my safety. I've been to games there before - and often see shows - my kids have done activities there. I think it's a nice crowd.

GMU’s Green Machine is considered the #1 pep band in the country. Doc Nix has created an incredible program, and it’s open to everyone. I know a few kids who have been in it.

This is such a fun thread. No affiliation with either school, but I want to go. Enjoy the game OP!
