| groceries sales tax is only 2.5% so you won't even noticed it after its repealed by Youngkin, you will only noticed it if you're poor and pay in cash or if you look at the bill, If you spend $100 dollars on groceries it will only save you $2.50.... If they want to repeal a tax they should start with the SALES TAX AND THE RESTATE TAX AND the INCOME TAX. Just removing the Groceries tax is bs.... |
| The grocery tax is flat and regressive. Second, taxing people because they have the audacity to eat food is wrong. |
|
Of all the things I dislike about Youngkin, this isn't one of them. Getting rid of sales tax isn't for people like us, it *is* for poor people. Or maybe it's to trick conservatives into thinking a politician is actually anti-tax, I don't know. But still I would be happy to see all grocery tax repealed.
Federal income taxes on the other hand, I have a beef with, just to the extent that there are so many tricks that the .1% can use to keep their tax bills so low. |
| If he’s going to repeal ANY taxes (frankly I think the ones we pay are fine) then I would pick this one. Some other states like PA do not tax food. |
| No, it’s not even on everything. |
| The grocery tax is ridiculous. That said, how is Youngkin going to replace the revenue? Is his plan the 80s style trickle down economics? Virginia is already a top state for businesses. Youngkin will probably make it less attractive since he wants extreme right wing policies here. |
| Most states don’t impose a sales tax on regular groceries. |
You want to get rid of your real estate and income tax? How will you fund FCPS’ $3 billion annual budget?
|
| If you spend just $500 per month on groceries, that's $1500 per year. Maybe that's nothing to you, but that's meaningful for many people. OP: you must be quite privileged. |
DC doesn’t have a grocery tax. We’re doing fine - universal pre-k, full paid leave, UBI pilot for new moms, and free Covid tests to all residents. But I suppose we’re too right wing for you? |
Uh, your math is off. If you spend $500/month or $6000/year on groceries then you are paying $150/year in tax at 2.5%. |
DC is irrelevant.. Virginia has this tax and generates revenue from it (I disagree with the tax, btw). The question is how will Virginia make up the lost revenue from eliminating the tax. |
Oh I'm sure Youngkin will think of something. Its not like VA is hurting for money. And the loss in grocery tax revenue is nothing compared to what McAuliffe's police of implementing paid leave and universal pre-k in Virginia would have done. If you're so worried about pennies you should count your blessings that didn't happen. |
