I am so sorry OP. My kid did not apply to Purdue in EA or RD. The truth is that the CS program is highly ranked at Purdue AND at the same time this was entirely yield protection.

I have no idea where my own kid will go and I have some lower ranked schools (ranked in 150-180) on the back burner and he will apply in March to them, if he continues to ride the rejection train. I have made my mind to go via community college or even reapply the next year if this year is a wash.

All the best to your kid. These are amazing stats. Is he White or Asian-American per chance?

OP, its Purdue's loss.

Already there are approx 1/2 million fewer kids enrolling.

Sorry. This is a racist country against Asian-American males. My kid has been dinged for the same for CS. In some ways, it has stripped the belief of "American equality" from the eyes of my children. They now realize what was the bamboo ceiling their parents had to face. Thankfully, our children are not starting with nothing here, like we did.
They have our financial support behind them. Hopefully, they will keep this lesson of racism close to their heart once they are in their careers.

DC admitted at Purdue Engineering and honors college - top private, 4.0 UW, 4.? weighted (not sure), 1580, 4-year varsity athlete + senior captain. As much science and math on transcript as possible. No merit money, though.

Does Purdue generally give out a lot of merit?

I think it is yield protection more than racial bias in this case. He was deferred to regular decision, not rejected. They want to see if he still is interested RD. They might assume he is applying somewhere even higher ranked ED and using Purdue as a back-up. If that's not the case, they know he will keep his application in RD. This is happening particularly in CS programs all over as there's a lot of shifting and competition to be more highly ranked. VT does this even by waitlisting people in RD--and then accepting a lot of students off the waitlist if they are still interested. Some of it is them just adjusting to massive increases in application to CS programs and general upsetting of application/enrollment cycles in the pandemic, some of it is trying to game the ranking system.
