| DS got into both (yeah!) and is trying to decide. He isn’t sure what he wants to major in, and I’m not sure (other than location) if there is a big difference between the schools, frankly. Anyone have any perspective they can share? |
| I HATE saying this, but I'd push for the bluer state over the red state. (and this goes for everything in my life now - after never considering this before 2 years ago) |
| ^^ same here. Would never allow my kids to go to school in Tennessee, for the same reasons (blue/red). |

Both are great colleges. I went to UD. I currently live in an SEC college town.
Tennessee will have a larger sports culture than UD as part of the SEC. Tennessee has a lot of Division I teams. Tennessee sports draws large crowds even for the Lady Vols. Lady Vols basketball averages around 14,000 per game in attendance. I would visit both and let him pick. UD, when I went there, drew a lot of kids from Long Island and New Jersey and the Philly area. I think only about 50% of the student body is from Delaware and most of those are from the Wilmington area. I was from the eastern shore of Maryland and only met one other student from Maryland in my 4 years at UD. Both colleges are great schools. |
| Tennessee is 17% African American student body so way more diverse than many of the northeast colleges. |
| TN no question nothing to do at Delaware on the weekends as most of the campus goes home |
| I think you should visit both of you haven’t already. I would also think about specific majors and programs to see if one offers an advantage. Tennessee is one of my DD’s favorites and we all really enjoyed Knoxville and thought the campus was beautiful. If she ends up there we are sure she’d have a great experience. We haven’t been to Delaware but we know a lot of people who really seem to like it. Good luck! Both good choices 😀 |
Good post. If school spirit is important, this is a no brainer. If not, it's a closer call. |
And I’d do the exact opposite! Ha! |
I'm a liberal, and this is such a silly and narrow way of thinking. OP's kid isn't planning on moving to Tennessee, and the local politics are decidedly liberal: https://www.knoxtntoday.com/democrats-sweep-city-council-elections/ I'd much rather go to UT. Academics compared to UR are a wash, and UT has to be a lot more fun. |
| PP here. I mean UD, not UR. |
| Good luck. My DD loved UDEL and it was a backup to our flagship in state college. If football is important go to UT. If not, UDEL is a great choice. They go out of their way to make you feel at home. |
You can just offer your own opinion, as asked, without editorializing/disparaging someone else's. Give it a try. |
Even if the someone else's opinion is based on silly, narrow-minded rationale, and that person could benefit from being called out as such? |
State laws are what matter here, and Tennessee is absolutely reactionary. |
