| When does registration for high school summer courses take place? Also, can a rising 9th grader take health classes in the summer before even starting high school in the fall? I tried looking for these answers in previous chats, but had no luck. Thanks. |

Rising 9th CANNOT take health. They can take tech.
As to the "when" - who knows ? Probably May. |

For our middle schooler, the high school counselors will be in next week then registration starts the following week ending early February.
For health, I believe the summer rule will be the same to take the class. Only rising 10th, 11th or 12th grade students. The courses are set by age/class by MD State DOE not MCPS. Though I heard yesterday that our rising 9th graders, Class of 2026, have to take a full year of health but that due to some content it might have to be split between two different school years. If this is true, how crazy will their scheduling be. My youngest is mad he has to take a full year as it is. |
My 2025 is mad about the extra semester of health, too. As it was announced after course registration last year, it tacks on an extra semester only class in the 4-year plan, which creates scheduling difficulties. Counselors are currently recommending scheduling it over 2 years with PE. But it is a real pain if your kid likes art or band because elective slots are not plentiful. |
Yes, they will now need a full year of health as well as a full year of PE. But the scheduling doesn't have to be that crazy--they can just take one semester of health/one semester of PE two years in a row. |
Last year, summer registration opened on May 3rd |
| My 9th grader completed the tech credit last summer, will take Health A next summer, Health B summer before 11th. In an IB program, wants to make sure he can take orchestra all 4 years since there are few open electives in the program. |
Are you sure it will be an option to take A this summer and B next summer? My 9th grader wants to do that as well but we weren’t sure what the options would be. |
| Registration opens in May. Some classes fill up so you want to be on the early end. |
| OP here. Thanks all! |
I'm in the same boat. My current 9th grader is registering now and is doing so based on the hope that she can take Tech B and Health A this summer. But it is pretty difficult not knowing if the classes will be offered, or when. |
Check with your MS school or home high school. The snow days and virtual learning are causing some dates to shift. For example, ours was supposed to be completed by next week but now we don’t know. The HS had said that the health could be taken in two summers (Health A/Health B). |
Our HS presentation indicated that it would. People were wondering if it was now a 6 week class though? This full credit health, PE, and Technology leaves very little room for kids to take electives or explore things in 9th/10th so they can then deepen study for 11th/12th. I honestly feel they should just include parts of during the PE required like in MS and then require a specific 0.5 credit health class. This additional credits make it really difficult for any band/orchestra students. |
For all courses with an A and B semester, both halves are offered in each summer school session. |
I agree it is difficult for band/orchestra. But it is really difficult for anyone (particularly in IB) who wants to take advantage of the possible courses. They are already limited by some fairly complex IB requirements, and if my kid can't get some of this out of the way in the summer, she won't be able to take some AP or elective courses that appeal to her. Not to mention, there are other ways she/we would like to spend the summer that we will likely have to forego just to take these classes. The health requirement particularly bugs me. They don't even have the curriculum yet, but how many times do they really need to be told to not do drugs, have safe sex if they are going to have sex, and eat vegetables? |
