Wake Forest wants a video?!

Anonymous
DC loves Wake Forest and after visiting in person, talking to a rep at at the highschool career day and laboring over the essay and writing prompts, she immediately received an email offering applicants the opportunity to submit a video, if they’d like, to further elaborate on a question about current events she already answered. She loves WF so much, but is a little spent. Does anyone know if kids get in RD without also submitting the video? The wording is basically you can do this, or feel free to “let your written application stand.” Trying to figure out why they are asking for this additional step…

Some things are optional and others are "optional"

Be assured, there will be hundreds of thousands of applicants who will jump this hurdle.

I’m feeling your dd’s spent-ness. I find that a super annoying option to give applicants at this point.

Unless your daughter lives under a rock and is over sheltered, they all know how to make Tiktoks and Instagram videos so it shouldn't be an issue

Wake Forest demanded the most when my DCs applied 5 years ago. It’s not an Ivy people. Wasted a lot of time on their application.

Two years ago my dd had visited and interviewed and then when it came time to apply, she decided that 5 supplementals wasn’t worth her time and effort and she never even applied. Wake really needs to sit down and take a deep breath. They just aren’t as high and mighty as they think they are.

When my DS applied there, they had a crazy amount of essays compared to other schools. BTW, he was accepted, but ultimately went somewhere else.

Lots of schools are offering this now. It is instead of an interview. My take is that it will help if you do it, but it won’t hurt if you don’t. My daughter felt the same way. It’s agonizing because all those supplements are time consuming and stressful. This is an added layer of stress that takes a bit of planning before the execution.

Davidson wanted a list of every book you had read in the last year or 3 or something.

One school wanted to know who you would invite to a dinner party (dead or alive), why and what you would cook.

(I actually thought that second one was interesting...but it is like they are trying to invade your kid's brain. The poor 17 year olds sure get a mental workout trying to game it all out!)

Is this her first choice at this point in the process? Then, yes. Is she trying to notch admissions, then probably still yes.

So many essays are written by consultants and parents these days, I don’t blame the schools who are trying to meet the actual student, so to speak. Also, I imagine some kids are better able to express themselves in a video versus essay and this opens the door to them.

Yes, let’s turn it back onto a beauty contest.
