I'm just here to vent, and hopefully commiserate with other parents. My DD's daycare class has been closed twice in the month of December due to COVID. Then closed for Christmas break. We all tested to return last week. Today we got a call before lunch that her class is closing AGAIN for another 10 days. For almost the past six weeks, she's had roughly 11 hours of in person care. I know the daycare is doing their best. I know parents and families are doing their best. I'm just not sure if it is worth it anymore to continue paying, knowing that there is a chance that each week a new kid could test positive and the class would never reopen. I've run out of leave and am going to start having to take LWOP. DH operates a business that is in person and can't take the time off or else he would have to shut down the business. Not sure if we should just bite the bullet and pull her out completely and get a nanny, or if I should just quit my job. I know there's no easy solution. This is just really hard.... |
Sorry OP, vent away. It sucks that nearly two years in families are still left to fend for themselves, it’s no wonder the labor market is so wacky right now. I was so dismayed about the news that vaccines for under 5s was still months away because these quarantines are brutal.
Not to make light of it at all, but it could always be worse- in MoCo it is still 14 days, not 19, and there’s no egging way we will ever get to the 5 that the CDC/state recommends. |
*10, not 19 |
It hasnt been that bad for us but I have had a similar view. Ive considered cutting my hours or having us split the day (530-2;12-8). I dont want to do this over and over and pay for a service we arent getting. The closings are not transparent IMO and as a private business they can make their own rules along with following HD regulations. Some serious decisions will need to be made if this continues. I am right there with you. Our son doesnt enter K until Fall 2023 so its a major commitment but we need some stability in our lives. |
Maybe consider a smaller daycare? It might help. I am at a small school and only had to close so far due to snow - we've been open every single day. |
Just here to commiserate. My toddlers have were home for two weeks before the break, daycare was closed for a week during the holidays and after two days back in last week out again for 10 days. I’m not sure what the answer is as my work has been accommodating thus far but I know that will only last so long. I want my daycare to stay open and to be able to pay its staff but I’m having a hard time justifying the thousands of dollars I’m spending for no care. Until the under 5s are able to be vaccinated I just don’t see the light at the end of this never ending tunnel. |
Yes to all of this. At least allow kids to return if they test negative after a week. |
Think we might be at the same daycare and same class. Feeling so burnt out. Told my boss I’d be back to work full time at 9am today only to get the call at 10:45. I don’t even understand how the exposure/testing/result is possible in that timeframe without some negligence ( best case was a rapid that someone didn’t pay attention to until 1+ hour later?)
Anyhow I’m sure the phone call tomorrow will be fun. There isn’t anything that can be said or done to make the situation better. Sigh— welcome to year 2 of this pandemic |
I'd get a nanny for a few months. |
Echoing we are also in a small daycare and had only 2 scares, only 1 day off. |
+1 I’ve had only one short Covid related daycare closures at my small center although of course the ubiquitous every two months week off for toddler colds which is honestly stressful enough for me. I’m so sorry you’re dealing with this op. It sounds hellish. |
I'd withdraw from this daycare and get a nanny. |
I’d ask them to consider implementing a test to stay policy for exposures. 10 days each time is untenable. |
OP here - This is a daycare located in DC. The Director says they have to follow OSSE regulations and since OSSE hasn’t approved test to stay and is still mandating 10 days of closure for a case in a classroom, they can’t do test to stay or shorten the quarantine period. I’ve searched everywhere online to find literature from OSSE that supports this or something that negates it and I can’t find anything definitive. I’m sure there are many parents at our facility that would be OK with shortening the quarantine period or implementing test to stay but the Director says that ultimately it’s not her decision. |
I’m past these years and accidentally clicked on this thread. But, I think this is not going to end soon. We as a society need to move into learning how to live with it. But here in the DMV, we just keep engaging in extreme responses. I don’t see anything that leads me to think it will change in the next year. I’d get a nanny if I were you. |
