Any thoughts on best local place for families that accepts the epic pass?
Ideally with ski school and/ private lessons. Thanks! |
| I think they are all currently closed. I wonder if Vail has less incentive to open Liberty/Roundtop/Whitetail as early as possible now that they get so much of the revenue from epic passes that were in already paid for. |
I don't think so. It's been in the 60s until yesterday and that's not Vail's fault. If you look at the webcams they are making snow like crazy at Whitetail (they got NONE of this storm). It looks like 2 trails are almost ready to go and they are working on one of the backside trails now. I'm guessing they will be open this weekend, although I will wait until next week when they have a few more open. OP, they are all fine for learning. Roundtop is a little farther from the DC area. I am equidistant from Whitetail and Liberty, but your drive may be different. |
| UGH not OP but we got the pass for the first time this year. We had booked to be at Liberty next weekend and Whitetail the weekend after. It didn't even occur to me they'd still be closed. This sucks. |
This happened to us a few years back. They allowed us to use the pass for two seasons. |
Ok yeah cause we're not going to Vermont or out West this year. I'm guessing even if they open the skiing won't be that great. Since the Big PA 3 are down anyone been to Jack Frost/BB? |
Thanks to this weeks cold weather it looks like both will be open. |
They both opened today, and based on the Whitetail webcam it looks like they will be able to open a lot more trails in the next couple of days. The liberty webcam was down last time I looked. I followed the webcams all week and on Monday they had no snow at all, and by today they had several trails ready to open so they've done a great job. |
They are now open, and given that Epic covers a lot of ski areas they are unlikely to refund for a shorter season at a couple of areas. There are some circumstances where you can make a claim but I am not sure this will qualify. |
We went to JF/BB over the holiday break for the first. JF was a nice mountain and I enjoyed the runs that were open, but it did get very crowded after 11:30 am with long lift lines. We were there 3 days. Drove up and skied from 11-3 day one. They skied 9-12 the other 2 days. They have 2 lifts in some spots, but not enough lift operators to open them both due to major staffing shortages this year and they way they merge lane the waits feel long. Contrary to how the yare grouped together BB is about 20 min from JF. We tried to go there one evening for night skiing and left after 3 runs. Lift lines were long and it was overrun with trashy drunk 20-somethings. Literally drinking in line with foul mouths and not being safe on the mountain. A friend was there the night before and had the same experience. The runs are also super short and not worth the long lift lines. I can not imagine being allowed to use the epic pass more than one year; there is no way Vail would allow that. It's going to be a short season in this area. FWIW we were at Whitetail this past Saturday and it was packed. Long lift lines and an insanely long line fore people who had to pick up passes at the window. |
No thanks |

Thanks for the JF/BB info. We made the call to switch from Liberty to JF for the upcoming weekend. Hopefully it won't be crazy but noted to go early and avoid BB.

| Every Epic resort I've been to lately has been a disaster. They are crowded and understaffed, and I spent all day waiting in lift lines rather than skiing (Park City, most notably). The Epic Pass is cheap, end of story. Vail has created an inferior ski experience and I'm not planning to buy their pass again, as there are too many competitors. |
| I’m not going to any local ski resorts with the riff raft |
| Anyone been to Liberty and can talk to the conditions? |
