I'm the chicken salad/mayo hater from the lunch thread. I think I've heard of something worse than chicken salad with all those fruitcake ingredients in it.
Tomato Soup Salad -can of tomato soup -gelatin -mayo- -chopped raw onion, celery, and green pepper It makes one of those horrifying 50s jello salad things- perhaps the only thing worse is one of those with canned tuna in it. WHHHYYYYYY |
| How can you possibly compare this to chicken salad |
They are both gross I'm talking about people putting all that weird crap in their chicken salad like grapes, apples, walnuts, pecans etc. I find that really rough |
You have serious issues. |

So that's tomato aspic. It is (was) a pretty common southern dish....wait for it...served with chicken salad.
It's not my favorite but when done well (with more ingredients than you list) it's like a solid gazpacho. |
You sound weird. |
+1 |
That is what chicken salad is. Nearly all varieties have a fried if some sort mixed in (raisins, grapes, dried cherries, sometimes nuts). What do you think chicken salad is or should be? |
|
Chicken salad is enhanced by the addition of fruit (dried or fresh) and nuts.
My grandmother made tomato aspic often -- molded in a circle tin with a cup of mayo blobbed in the center. Often, it would sit on the table for hours before we ate. So, I've never actually eaten tomato aspic. |
Now I want a Waldorf salad |

OP you’re a bit disingenuous with what you posted. Classic recipe doesn’t call for canned tomato soup.
http://www.jamesfarmer.com/jamesfarmer/2011/04/tomato-aspic.html Tomato Aspic 2 Tablespoons of unflavored gelatin ½ cup of cold water 2 ½ cups of tomato juice ¼ teaspoon of red pepper 1 teaspoon of salt 1 teaspoon of Worcestershire sauce 2 tablespoons of lemon juice 1 tablespoon of onion juice ¾ cup diced celery Cup of chopped green pimiento stuffed olives |
| Chicken salad with fruit and/or nuts is so delicious. |
| I have tasted a couple of tomato aspics at my southern grandmother’s house. It’s basically jellied gazpacho — not much weirder than cranberry sauce when you think about it. I will never make it, but I don’t think it’s all that horrifying. |
