This is the major thing parents need to do- go get a rapid test from your school or one you already have, test on 1/4 (no earlier) and upload results HERE https://dcps.dc.gov/safereturn to attend school 1/5.
I hope the message gets through via school communications, because it was kind of buried in the press conference today. |
| The overwhelming majority of parents will do nothing and just send their kids in the same way they normally would. |
| Here’s my prediction: the site will crash on Tuesday when everyone goes to upload their results. |
Right. Hence the S show. But in theory they will then have to test outisde before allowed in. |
Ugh. Probably. |
Probably, what happen in all the title I schools where ES students just show up because their parents never got the message? Are they going to turn away second graders whose parents just drop them like normal? |
No, as the PP stated, they will administer rapid tests on site. We go to a Title 1 and the PTA is already talking about this. Also, based on prior experience, I expect our teachers will be doing more direct outreach to families to make sure they know and can come get a rapid test on Monday or Tuesday. We take care of each other at these schools. |

I looked at the instructions on the Test Yourself DC website. Looks like there is a 3-5 day turnaround on results if you pick up a test at a library location.
Confused about why that is part of the instructions -- if a kid used that test on Jan 4, they likely would not have results in time to return Jan 5, right? |
I felt like the PTA never did a good job connecting with people outside of its demographic in my Title 1 experience. |
No, they just want rapid tests you can do at home. 15 mins. |
And are the 15 minute tests available from the Test Yourself locations? |
Yes. And they will be available to pick up at your school on 1/3 and 1/4. |
|
| Why can't they test at school? I'm in a position to test my kids and upload, but I am sure many families are not. |

The Test Yourself program are PCR tests that you do at home and drop into a collection box. The test is sent to a lab for processing.
The antigen rapid tests are also one you do at home, and you process the result in your home in 15 minutes. Not as accurate and dependable as the PCR tests but are good enough for the purpose of getting kids and staff back into the school. Pick up your rapid tests at your child's school on Jan 3 or 4. Administer your child's test on Jan 4 and enter the results in the online portal: dcps.dc.gov/safereturn |
