DC had largest percentage drop in population in nation

I'm sure covid played a role in the 2.9% decline in population. The real interesting read in this story is that at least 7 of the top 10 are blue. Are people sick of the authoritarian edicts coming from these blue leaders and moving to a normal red state?

People were moving out of urban areas because initially that's were the largest covid outbreaks were. DC is one big city so it is hard to compare it to states that have a mixture of urban and rural areas.

Or, people moved from cities to the burbs for more space in a pandemic that has made remote work a permanent option for many.

This. It makes no sense to compare DC to states. Would be more useful to compare DC to metros like LA, SF, NY but still those metros will include suburbs which DC does not.

+1. A lot of people chose more space for less $ once that became an option. Not a surprise.

From the article. The common theme is that these jurisdictions are controlled by Democrats

D.C. ranked 7th among states and the District with the largest number of residents who left over the past year. New York topped that list with a drop of 319,020 residents, followed by California with a decline of 261,902 people.

Again, people were leaving cities. Cities tend to be led by Democrats. If these trends hold, the impact will not be to dilute blue cities and states -- which will remain blue -- but to add more liberals to red areas.

Correlation is not causation. Most (all?) big, expensive cities are controlled by Democrats.

Or more likely is that these are more expensive areas, and in a pandemic with remote options and looking for more space, people are moving to cheaper areas.

Lol DC population is 689,545. So maybe 20,000? Overall population way up

Since 2010, Washington’s population has grown 14.6 percent — nearly double the national rate — jumping from about 602,000 to 689,545, according to data released by the U.S. Census Bureau on Monday.

Well the insurrectionist and Trump were not under the control of the locals. Those white supremacists and Nazis do not live in the city. I do take your point we as a nation should do something about those type of thugs and lowlifes.

DC also had the longest school closures in the country. People left so their kids could get an education.
