I’m not sure if this is the correct place to post this, but is anyone aware of an animal sanctuary or rehab in Maryland that would be open to taking an injured deer? There is one in a neighbor’s yard. Thanks for any thoughts. |
No, but a police officer will dispatch it quickly. The world does not need more deer. |

This tells you who to call. |
Thanks for your posts. To follow up, after calling around, Dept of Natural Resources suggests leaving the deer on its own as long as it can walk at all, but says that no organization would rehab it. |
We had a deer whose leg was practically hanging off and she recovered. They are tough. But yes, no one will rehab them so if you call someone there's only one end |
They’re tough, but my gosh, dispatch the poor thing so it doesn’t suffer. |
Dispatch?
Where are you from? |
I’m in Fairfax County. Years ago, I called Animal Control and got routed to the police department upon my report of a severely injured deer; the deer was unable to walk and attempting to hold its injured leg up rather than bear weight.
A police officer came by and said he was allowed two shots and would have to kill the deer, as it was the most humane thing to do. He came back to my door a few minutes later to say that he missed-twice-and the deer, now frightened, went deeper into the woods, presumably to die. He said his fellow officers were going to give him hell because he was such an awful shot. |
From the Midwest. Don’t make animals suffer. |
The police will euthanize the deer humanely if it is suffering. Call the non-emergency line. |
Police Dispatcher here. Most of the above info is correct. Deers are not predators so even with injuries they can still eat and get around. If it’s not bad they should be left alone. If a deer is suffering thought we will shoot it to put it out of its misery. Depending on the county you live in though depends who picks up the body. If it’s shot today ( Sunday) you may have the body in your yard until Monday. Police don’t take the body after shooting it. |
I have done this before. They shoot it. It is over quickly. |
Are citizens allowed to shoot them? There are too many deer anyways |
Only during hunting season and not in a neighborhood. |
If you call the right neighbor you’ll get some venison in a few weeks. |
