Where to bike?

Does the DMV have someplace that a serious road biker can go and ride for several miles (maybe a loop) that doesn’t have cars and pedestrians?
Anonymous
No. I think you're looking for a velodrome or an unpopulated area.

Weekends they close parts of Rock Creek parkway

There are hundreds of miles of paths where you won’t find a single car, all around the area. I’m sorry you don’t like having to share them with the rest of us, but that’s your problem not ours.

Is this a serious question?

I think you kind of have to pick one (cars or pedestrians). I sympathize -- I would love the same thing! Beach Drive is great (closed to cars in large sections on weekends and enough room to pass pedestrians easily). W&OD is also great; just announce yourself when passing and pass quickly, don't ride people's tails. Mt. Vernon tends to be where the amateur cyclists go so it can get crowded on weekends. But we're in winter weather right now so more casual cyclists are off the trails.

In Virginia you can ride from the suburbs of fairfax into dc on bike paths.

Mostly they're not really bike paths, though. They're paved multi-use (bicyclists, pedestrians, joggers, children in strollers, dogs...) trails.

Actually it is a bike path. You just have to learn to share.

When it’s warmer I love riding up the coast near fenwick. There is a path along the highway.

No, they are multi-use paths, except for a small section of the W&OD trail that has separated tracks for bicyclists and pedestrians.

What do you think multi-use means?

Np.

A cyclist saying you have to share mixed use trails? lolololololol

Translation: Move out of my way, I'm going to thread the needle and go in between you because you're in my way so now move!

What stupid county is going to build bike paths that are only for bikes?
What a waste of money.
I am annoyed at Arlington and dc eliminating car lanes for bike lanes but I get it. Safer for the cyclists and less annoying for cars. If a county spent a bunch of money on bike only paths I would move if I lived there.

The multi use paths are pretty empty on cold mornings. Surely a serious cyclist like you has the right cold weather gear.
