Looking for experiences in using a bike to transport to and from daycare. We live approximately 1 mile from daycare and I would like to start biking my son to and from. We would walk but it takes forever with a 4 year old and he is averse to any type of carrying.
Is the trailer or seat a better option? We would cross two streets- both have pedestrian walkways and are in a neighborhood. He is getting a bike for Christmas and in a year we may encourage him to ride solo to and from with us. |
| I would do a seat. Trailers aren’t good for riding in the road due to drivers not paying enough attention and not seeing them. |
| I used to do a trailer and it was ok. If I could do it again I'd get one of those bikes with the big box in front. Probably electric boost because they look heavy. |

Agreed on the seat for one kid. We do a trailer for two kids but unless you have space to store it with the trailer on and don't use it for anything else it is a pain to take it on and off and store it. My son also started using a trail-a-bike the same age, which he loves (although same issue with taking on an off but a bit easier to store).
https://www.trail-a-bike.com/products/trail-a-bikes/original-folder-compact/ If you might have more kids I would look at a cargo bike- the ones with the box in front have the same issue with storage but are fund for kids. The Tern GSD is nice and compact; the Rad Power Wagon is decently priced but heavy. |
| This is a great question for the DC Family Biking page on Facebook! Lots of folks locally who bike with their kids there. For us we have a long-tail e-bike that we carry two kids, 7 and 4 on regularly. It's our second car. |
I will join this thank you. We are in PG county and our daycare is just a bit too far to walk because of the timing but I would assume that bike riding would be twice as fast so instead of it being a 30 to 40 minute thing making it like a 15 to 20 is reasonable. I also want to try and limit our car trips to the grocery store and other places like parks around the area. |
No we're likely one and done but if we do have a second kid it wouldn't be until another 2 years. So would be like a 7 year old and a 2 year old which I don't think a trailer would apply at that point anyways. I am interested in the trailer bike my concern being that he isn't as restrained then. I mean part of the reason why I don't want to walk is because he has a new obsession with pine cones and every single one needs to be inspected. Not thinking I explained to him that pine cones hold the seeds and the seeds are what the trees grow and so it's like how trees make baby trees. And so the follow-up question to every pine cone is what mommy tree do you think this belongs to and what type of tree do you think is going to look like? Both parents have ADD and I'm not entirely certain that he wouldn't just stop and jump off of the thing if he saw something interesting 🤔 |
| I would stick to walking, or taking the bus, in that case. A bike just isn’t for you under circumstances like that. |
Why? Plenty of people bike with small children who are interested in pine cones. |
DP If you can’t control your child enough that there’s a chance they’d hop off a bike when something catches their attention, then in the interest of safety thry shouldn’t be on a bike. |
