Silly question about frozen peas

Anonymous
I have 2 toddlers who eat small amounts. I buy frozen peas but I want to cool less than the whole bag at a time. My kids will eat about 1/4 of a bag but the instructions on the back describe how to cook the entire bag. How do you cook a small amount of frozen peas? Microwave (if so in what kind of dish, do you cover), boiled, sauteed??

thanks

How do you cook the whole bag? You can cook it any way.

If you're microwaving them, just put a smaller container and a shorter time period. Experiment by cutting the time way back, and then tasting until you get to the time you want. Maybe add a pat of butter, or don't, depends what your kids like.

If boiling, just use less water.

I also used to just put them in a container and let them thaw in their lunch box. They're already cooked, and so they'd taste like the ones from dinner.

I put 1/4 of the bag in a ceramic bowl and microwave for 60 seconds.

The Trader Joe’s fresh English peas are also very popular in my household - I microwave those for 2 mins 30 seconds, add some salt and kids love them.

I microwave them in a glass dish and cover the dish with a one of those big microwave covers. I find they get very hot, explode (ie mushy) and then cool quickly so they are basically cold midway through their meal.

They are not in school right now but I will file away that thawing idea!

Ours eats them frozen 😆. Started when she was teething, became an acquired taste. At most I add a serving to hot food and they thaw/warm up. You could microwave with butter for 30-60 seconds or simmer in water for a few minutes on the stove. Just cook the portion you need and keep the rest frozen.

I don't know how it started, but my kids like to eat peas and corn frozen! They get upset if I cook them.

My MIL was here at one point and I basically put two bowls of frozen veggies on the island. Kids would come running by, grab a handful of peas or corn, and continue on their way. MIL thought I was off my rocker, but they ate a ton of veggies before dinner even started! And they still each wanted a pile of frozen stuff on their dinner plates.

I just buy the peas where you can steam the whole bag in the microwave. Done.

Refrig leftovers (or eat yourself).

Just put them in a bowl with a plate on top and microwave them for a few minutes.

Plus 1 to frozen

Peas don’t really need to be cooked. I usually put them in water and microwave to heat through, or add them frozen into an already hot dish at the end of cooking. They thaw quickly.

You can thaw small amounts under a hot faucet for a few seconds.

My kids, now 7 and 11, also still eat them frozen. They are not such quick eaters that some don’t defrost in the plate but otherwise yup, frozen. Frozen corn is their favorite vegetable.

I just dump any amount into a small pot, along with a generous couple splashes of water, a knob of butter, and some salt. Drain to serve.

I put some in a glass dish. Cover with water and microwave. Drain and add salt and butter
