My inspection sticker expires in December, and it's always such a pain because December is just so damn busy. I'd love to push it until the first week of January.
What's the likelihood of getting caught for having an inspired sticker in VA? Is it just a matter of being caught by a cop? Is there a grace period? |

| Just go get the car inspected. Come on. Being busy is not an excuse for something that happens every year. |
| Come on dude. If you have time for DCUM, you have time for your inspection. Just get it over with so you don't have to think about every time you get in the car. Enough with excuses. |

Don't the penalty fees start accumulating?
In DC, if you let the inspection expire, it triggers a trip to the DMV in order to pay the penalty fees. Whereas, if you meet the deadline, you just prepay online and go to the inspection station at your appointment time. You might waste a lot more time if you don't meet the deadline. Be careful. |
No fees in VA that I’m aware of. I let mine slip from August to September. September is just generally easier to manage with the kids back in school and such. It was NBD. |
| Not a big deal at all. Just do it when you can do it. We've let it expire before. |

Practically nil, I don't think police can pull you over for an expired inspections anymore. Actually, 4 months later they can
Virginia Code §46.2-1157 states that “[n]o law-enforcement officer shall stop a motor vehicle due to an expired vehicle inspection sticker until the first day of the fourth month after the original expiration date." Now, guess they could give you a ticket if pulled over for something else. |
| Do you mean Safety / or Emissions and therefore your Tags have expired? |
|
In Virginia, it is now no longer a primary offense until 4 months after the inspection expiration date. You could not be pulled over for the expired inspection until April 1. That doesn't mean they couldn't pull you over for speeding or any other infraction, notice your inspection is expired, and then write you for an expired inspection.
If you do get a ticket, and then go to the court date showing that it has been properly inspected, you would get the charge dismissed but still pay court courts (~$80 depending on jurisdiction) In reality, it's probably close to nil that you get a ticket for it. That said, it doesn't take very long to get it done . . . |

OP here, thanks for the replies.
If a cop sees your expired inspection sticker in a parking lot, can you get a ticket? And yes, I *could* find the time (and it takes forever, because there is always a wait) but I am not sure I'd pass inspection - last time my tires were acceptable, but on their last legs. I already have new tires planned to be put on, on Dec 23rd. So I don't want to risk failing inspection only to have to go in again after getting new tires on. Generally, it's just so much easier to wait to January because Dec is always such a pain. I kind of want to break the cycle so I get it in January, every year. |
In DC, parking cops can and do issue tickets for expired inspection or registration. |
Yes. |
| In va you are fine. |
| +1 to it being no big deal in Virginia. And you get a free month out of it! |
