I hate Panera Bread and chocolate. |
My immigrant parents worked blue collar jobs all their lives with just a MS education from their home country. They saved, saved, saved enough to buy a small house. It's hard for my parents to understand how Americans can't get themselves out of poverty if immigrants who come to this country not knowing the language can manage it. Back when my parents immigrated, there were no language accommodations made in gov't offices or schools. They do see the "poor Americans" as lazy. |
You sound very bitter. The friends I know who went there went on to Yale Law School, Stanford Law School, and other top graduate programs. |
Try $250,000. |
Sweden is great if you have a dual WOHP family in highly educated but poorly paying professions (eg, scientist). Doctors and lawyers do much better in the US. |
I don't hate it, but Panera is so overrated for meals. |
It's better to live in a smaller house that you've paid off by middle age then a big house that you pay off by age 60 - 70.
I encourage my kids to not be always "wanting" things. Wanting to buy this or that toy or clothes. People are so much happier when they aren't materialistic. |
I am pregnant with my first and DH and I agree that while we want him to know we think he is wonderful and special to us, he is *not* a snowflake. While I plan to encourage him and will be proud of him for giving his best effort, I want him to know that real life does not involve participation rewards, he is not above others, and the rules do apply to him.
I'd like to think this isn't a minority opinion, but I see so many parents out there who let their children run around screaming and bumping into adults in public and they have this look on their face like "isn't my little Jimmy just *the* cutest ever." Seriously, I do not want to raise a child who thinks the world revolves around him and he can do whatever he wants/that mommy and daddy will bail him out of eberthing when he gets older. |
We've all been there, done that. That is, take on this sanctimonious tone about how well do it differently. Get back to us when your kid tantrums in public and pregnant moms state you down. Yawn. |
Agree |
If the illegal Mexicans were so "hardworking," they'd put forth the effort to immigrate here the correct way. Get in line, Jose; you're no better than Sven or Hans or Soon-Yi or Katerina. |
I think drinking alcohol, smoking pot, and doing drugs is trashy although the majority of people think it makes them classy. |
I would be thrilled for DS to go to UMD. No interest at all in Ivy League schools. Absolutely don't think they're a predictor of success. |
Psst. Sven, Hans and Katerina have a leg up on Jose. They're white. Soon-Yi is in between-his people are a model minority known for quickly assimilating. |
Okay, how about Desalagne waiting his number to be called from Ethiopia. He too wants to immigrate and become a U.S. citizen, but must wait 17 years and pay thousands of dollars. Oh, did I mention that Desalagne is an engineer in Addis and speaks English. |
