Karen Goldberg singing New York State of Mind at Babe's near Tenley Circle...early 80s.
Hot Shoppe in Shirlington, mid 60s. Anyone see American Graffiti...yeah, 22206 had a hangout like that. Rep. Joe Fisher, the best representative the Peoples' Republic of Arlington ever had in Congress. Rep. Broyhill, farther out into Fairfax. Camelot, there was a First Couple with class. |
|
Joe Fisher succeeded Joel Broyhill in Congress and his widow still lives in Arlington with a US flag always flown. Broyhill and his family built much of Arlington and some of McLean. Broyhill's last big project was The Representative Condo in Arlington's Crystal City
Joe Fisher was a gem and two Fisher House low income apartment buildings in Arlington's Westover neighborhood are his legacy. |

Umm...Dietel's is still there isn't it? Or is it not the same now? |

I'm sure some of these were mentioned, but anyone remember:
Zayre's Ames Acme SuperSaver Sizzler W. Bell & Co. Putt Putt Golf and Games Memco Phineas Bob's Big Boy Bradlees A&P BurgerChef Arco Gas Stations Best Gino's Farrell's |
Great list! I was just thinking about W. Bell the other day because I was in that area at Tysons and remembering where it used to be. My mom and I used to go there to look at sapphire and amethyst rings. Also, curling irons! Who knew there was a store where you could get both things.
Do you remember Hit or Miss? I bought almost all of my clothes there during middle school. My first bikini came from there, when I was 13. There was also a Dart Drug in the same shopping center (this was Leesburg Pike Plaza). |
Hank Dietle's is definitely still there. |
| Is there still an aquarium store in the congressional plaza? |
It was in the Montrose development right off of Montrose Rd. I'm not sure of the exact address but it was on either Mark or Wilmart Lane. Closed in 1982. There is a senior living facility there now, lol. |
Correction: it was at 300 Lorraine Drive. The site is currently leased by The Hebrew Home of Greater Washington, according to this link http://parentscoalitionmc.blogspot.com/2014/03/over-20-unused-public-school-sites.html |
| Does anyone remember the Youth Center/Colony Shop on Hungerford Drive? My mom got most of my clothes there. I loved that tunnel in the Youth Center side. I shopped At the Colony Shop as a teenager in the 80s. They had a good acid washed jeans selection for a minute. I think they closed when I was in college and now it's an Asian grocery store. |

Tyson's Corner 2 wasn't there. It was all grass.
Thelma's in Great Falls. Thelma sold homemade ice cream and used an ancient black cash register. Spring Hill rec center didn't exist. That was also grass. Cars were either very small (think 80s gas savers) or very big (think 70s gas guzzlers). |
Thanks for answering and posting the link! There are a ton of those that I didn't know about, plus there are a lot of schools I do know about that aren't on that list! I was at Chevy Chase ES when they closed Rollingwood for low enrollment. |
I remember the Colony Shop. I was probably in middle school. |
I went to St. Marys and that is where we had to get our uniforms for a time. I used to go to the colony shop also. Wow- that was so long ago for me. |
