NNAT3

Just got a notice my son will be tested this week - what is this test used for? Does anyone know how APS administers is? (Computer, iPad, paper). My son does not handle lack of advance notice too well so would love to give him a little bit of context.

I think it’s used for gifted designation, though that may not mean much depending on your school. I think it’s administered by iPad but someone should confirm.

How long does it typically take to get results?

Bump - does anyone know when to expect the results?

A few years ago, it took well into spring until results got to parents.

Considering we didn't get assessment data until mid November for tests that were taken in September, I wouldn't count on getting it back anytime soon.

What percentile is gifted designation?

It used to be that a 135 on the NNAT got you put in the pool to be assessed for gifted services. However, it isn't a guarantee. APS looks heavily on "behavioral" evidence of giftedness, which at the elementary school level seems to mean kids who have a naturally competitive and over-achieving personality at a young age. If your kid is more laid-back, they might not get identified until the Cogat in 4th grade. This was my experience with my two kids-- one who was picked up in 2nd grade, and the other who was not tagged until 5th grade. They are both equally intelligent, just very different personalities. FWIW, at our ES, there were also a lot of 2e kids who got identified through private testing outside of the APS/NNAT process. All that to say, the APS identification process has some serious flaws. Unfortunately, APS has been using that as an excuse to try to get rid of GT services altogether, instead of addressing the identification problems.

How often does APS administer the NNAT? Every year?

Huh, that is interesting. I will have to see how it pans out with my kids. First (now in 4th) was identified in K but he is extremely outgoing and constantly wants to be talking/answering questions. Just got the scores for my youngest and he scored a 136 and haven't heard anything yet. But he is MUCH more reserved and I have difficulty getting feedback on him from teacher's because he won't interact much.

My first grader at Discovery just got her score, received a 130/97th percentile. My question is: where is the data drawn from to calculate the distribution? Is it just the student’s school? APS county wide? National?

First time going through any of this so trying to figure out how much to read into her score…
