It used to be that a 135 on the NNAT got you put in the pool to be assessed for gifted services. However, it isn't a guarantee. APS looks heavily on "behavioral" evidence of giftedness, which at the elementary school level seems to mean kids who have a naturally competitive and over-achieving personality at a young age. If your kid is more laid-back, they might not get identified until the Cogat in 4th grade. This was my experience with my two kids-- one who was picked up in 2nd grade, and the other who was not tagged until 5th grade. They are both equally intelligent, just very different personalities. FWIW, at our ES, there were also a lot of 2e kids who got identified through private testing outside of the APS/NNAT process. All that to say, the APS identification process has some serious flaws. Unfortunately, APS has been using that as an excuse to try to get rid of GT services altogether, instead of addressing the identification problems.[/quote]
