I have suffered from “Trypophobia” my entire life.
(I am fifty-two.) Meaning any + every time I see a cluster of organized (or unorganized!) bumps or holes, I immediately feel nauseous/creeped out or just really itchy + uncomfortable. My worst moment was when I was watching a Michael B. Jordan action hero movie (cannot remember the title). The scene where his skin is covered in a cluster of organized bumps on his chest made me leave immediately. Seeing holes on a sponge 🧽 or even a sugar comb freak me out as do a beehive and bedbug bites. The worst is of course the “Surinam Toad.” 😳 That toad who gives birth through a cluster of holes on its back. Please…. Anyone else have this weird disorder?? |
| I have the same exact fear, OP. I get chills when I think of a cluster of holes. |
| no, but I have a fear of pipes--mainly water pipes. I hate them and they freak me out. Always have. It's so obscure I haven't been able to find any meaningful information on google. |
| I have always had this but never understood what it was until recently. There's some interesting articles about how it is evolutionary: people get creeped out by clustered holes to avoid the diseased, like those with small pox. |
| Exposure therapy is supposedly good for this stuff. You do 2 seconds, 5 seconds, 10, etc. until it's tolerable |
| My DH and dd have this. I find it silly. |
| Cicada emergence holes were a trigger |
| OP, this actually got some media attention when one of the new phones was introduced -- maybe the latest iPhone? It was a phone where the camera had not the old one or two but three lenses, looking like three black holes on the camera. Apparently in some people it created reactions just like you mention, feeling a range from skeeved out to almost sick. I had never heard of the condition before seeing some news items about that phone, but the articles did raise some awareness that the condition is a real thing. I'm sorry you have it and maybe, like someone said, exposure therapy could help. |
| I have it too. I didn't know what it was and was a biology teacher and talked to one of my colleagues about how spongey bone made me nauseous. Years later he sent me an article in the washington post about the condition. Made complete sense. Ever see those things in potpourri, the things that have seeds missing? Ugh. Just thinking about it makes me feel sick. Don't get me started on honeycombs... |
| If so, OP, why did you add the graphics to your thread title? |
| I have never heard of this before! So you guys get sick at the sight of sponges? |
I think it’s a pattern spotting thing. I am great a spotting patterns and some were evolutionary sick or dangerous. I hate pheasant feathers. 🤢 |
| Whatever you do, don't google "lotus boob." |
+ 1 What does this stem from??? |
OMG- me too. But I do know the origin of my phobia - It was something random from childhood that just stuck with me. |
