I admit that I got up at 4 a.m. today to watch. It wasn't the outcome they wanted, but it is fun watching this new batch of players.
Excited to see Ashley Hatch with two goals. Can't wait for Trinity Rodman to join the pool. |
| If you watch the European women club teams it is hard to watch the USWNT. |
OP here. I do watch the European clubs and agree with you to an extent. Still, I'm a fan of the USWNT. Watching the European women's clubs play also ruins men's soccer for me. I love the speed of play on the women's side without the proliferation of flopping. |
Club teams are always going to be better/smoother than national teams...unfair comparisons. |
Yet club teams are where profitable fandom is based. It is hard to grow the game when all you are promoting or care about is the National Team. Imagine trying to grow Ice Hockey based on the 4 year cycle of the Olympics. We should be more invested in our domestic leagues and European leagues in order to drive interest and fandom towards the game. |
I watch those club teams because I like soccer. They play a very entertaining style. It is athletically and technically demanding. I really do not find the USWNT entertaining. They do not really play a fluid games. It’s like watching an all star game where only a few players fit the system of play. |

You mean club womens teams subsidized by the club mens team because the club thinks there’s a market? You mean money makes the world go ‘round? No, you don’t say …
|
Who’d they play and what was the final score? Way too early for me to watch a friendly. |
WTH is this even about? |
It was 1-1 today in their second game against Australia. |
Club level soccer is always superior to national team soccer. Manchester City, Liverpool, Bayern all play a far more entertaining style than the mens national teams for Italy, Brazil, Germany, France . . . That shouldn’t be surprising to anyone. The club teams practice together for 10 months and play 40-50 games across all competitions. The national teams practice for maybe 6-8 weeks in any given year, spread over multiple international breaks. As a result, all men’s national teams play like an all-star team, with basic, simple tactics. The only times you see decent play is when a national team is primarily comprised of players from the same club team - like Germany when most of their starters also played for Bayern, or Spain with Barca, or Italy with Juventus. Same is true for the women. I don’t know why that surprises anyone. |
Yet the US will win the next world cup. |
LOL sure with all their young talent. |
They will put their opponents to sleep with their boring play. |
And big deal. We all get riled up every four years. That level of support is not sustainable to grow the game. Domestic leagues need to come first. Tournament style soccer is generally ugly style and that is how NWSL plays. It is not entertaining to watch and over the coming years our USWNT will be surpassed and by then it will be to late. Imagine if we treated basketball this way. Nobody really cares about the Olympics in terms of spending 4 years developing our Olympic Basketball team. The NBA is the undisputed top league in the world and that is what we watch, drives fandom as well as our overwhelming success. It is kinda hilarious how we follow a team that only plays meaningful games every four years. |
