increased police around schools to stop traffic violations?

What do we think of this?

https://www.washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/2021/11/29/dc-traffic-police-schools/

"D.C. police will increase traffic safety patrols around certain schools in the city, so that they can stop drivers who speed or run red lights or stop signs near school buildings, Mayor Muriel E. Bowser (D) announced Monday."

My take on this is that it will be useless, since cops can't chase drivers anyway. They will be lucky if they catch the license plate.

I'd welcome this as parents tend to double park to run their child into the school building which I witness on many occasions on Missouri Ave and 13th streets NW.

I think this is great. Just them sitting there will make more drivers come to a full stop, slow down etc.

Another in favor. For those who can walk to school without crossing big streets, this may seem unnecessary, but I worry about our walk to school every day, since it involves some big streets and unsafe intersections. I just wish that IN ADDITION, DDOT would implement more traffic calming measures and road diets.

7 cops for 6 hours per day issuing warnings for a couple of weeks seems like a fairly useless drop in the bucket relative to DC's 200+ schools and the horrifying driving that happens around them every day. This seems like a program designed to generate press (it has) and not actually help anything.

Where are you getting 7 cops?

For number of cops and more info about the plan (no thanks to WaPo's reporting, which seems clearly in the bag for the mayor):

They should do what they do in R.I. - park a cop car with an inflatable officer on the street. Amazingly effective.

As for some unknown reason DC isn't really enforcing collection of any parking or ticketing for MD drivers (or other out of state), who I'm sure are part of the peril on our streets... not sure how this is supposed to be anything more than a symbolic gesture. Also, if police take any action they get filmed and yelled at by citizenry. But thanks!

Can they stop the double parking parents? This is a huge issue around our school. Parking isn't even that difficult around the school.

This will do nothing. It’s a joke.

Bowser needs to put some real effort into having Maryland and Virginia agree to reciprocity so DC can enforce traffic violations. It’s absurd that Md and Va drivers rack up literally thousands of dollars in unpaid fines with no recourse.

I hope there will be a public comment process on what should be part of the traffic safety literature that the School Resource Officers will be handing out. For instance, a gentle reminder for Maryland drivers that the sidewalk is not a passing lane.

Which part do you not understand?

Currently, there is no enforcement mechanism for DC. So we can ticket MD and VA drivers, but if they don’t pay their tickets, there’s absolutely nothing we can do, because Virginia and Maryland refuse to suspend plates/licenses of people who rack up unpaid fines in DC. So you have extremely dangerous out of state drivers with thousands of dollars in tickets continuing to drive recklessly.

Bowser was supposed to approach MD and VA about fixing the is situation. She said she had. Turns out she didn’t and lied about it.

Next time you’re almost run over by a Maryland driver, run the plate. Bet you’ll find a ton of unpaid tickets.
