Did Dexter have Autism?

We just started S5. The way he delt with R's death. He didn't know how to react.

The way he is aloof at work. Doesn't pick up on cues.

And the way coworkers make fun of him, that wouldn't happen now, because of Autism awareness.

[Spoiler alert if this wasn't revealed prior to Season 5]

I think the idea is that he was deeply traumatized by witnessing his mother's brutal murder and being locked in with her dismembered body for hours (days?), and so he's emotionally damaged. No suggestion that he was autistic prior to that.

seems spectrum-y.

Dexter is a sociopath aka someone with anti social personality disorder.

Many of the traits of not being able to connect with people are similar to those with autism, but they are different.

Both autism and ASPD are classified as mental disorders in the DSM.

I don't think Dexter's moral code is vastly different from most people's, which is why he is a relatable figure that audiences tend to like. I think the difference is that he's more willing to take out the trash than most of us.

In Michael C Hall's personal life, he seems to fall in love with co-stars. he's been married 3x. Each wife was someone he worked with.

He's also skilled and trained at not getting caught. Would YOU take out some trash if you knew that you absolutely never ever would get caught?

Probably not. I don't even take out the literal trash in my house.

No he as antisocial personality disorder with sociopathic traits secondary to childhood trauma witnessing the murder of his mother and likely some genetic predisposition to this diagnosis through his father who clearly had some DSM 5 diagnoses himself.

Not autism spectrum. Though his inability to read social cues or a need to mimic and learn how to relate to others could be a shared factor.
