25 years ago, it was a commuter school mostly. It probably changed.

This was our feeling. When we toured this summer, there was a DJ at the main pool, which was surrounded by palm trees. My DC thought the campus was pretty, but after talking to 3-4 kids, didn't think the academics were serious because they only focused on the campus amenities (dining, laundry service etc). This opinion was reinforced when we saw the billboard on I-40 touting HPU as "the life skills university." I'm not sure what that is, but the school spends a lot of money marketing that tag line.

Are you gonna become furniture salesmen after graduation?

Their marketing creeps me out. It’s like a time share sales company. My kid has received mail from them twice weekly for months without expressing any interest. Their mailings have increased in size to the point that they no longer fit in our mailbox. Today’s is literally a 14” square. They tout things like “here’s a golden ticket to a special presentation by our president” and early decision applications get premier parking passes and other perks. The mail alone let us know the place was too sleezy to even bother googling.

Elon is a step up.

A school for thoroughly average kids whose parents are unusually wealthy.

Elon is actually a respectable university.
I equate a High Point diploma with the validity of a Liberty diploma.
The northern version is Quinnipiac.

I have no bias, one daughter in college and a senior not applying to High Point. PPs do not know what they are talking about. High Point provides a stellar education in an encouraging environment—and gives merit aid. It is a fine choice. A girl my daughters age who was All Met athlete in soccer, straight A student and 35 on ACT is at High Point. And loving it. Don’t be so closed minded. Some kids don’t want to freeze their asses off at Amherst.

I think high point is occupying the niche that Elon used to. It’s a beautiful campus and you can pay for your under achiever to get the four year college experience there and pretend the quality of the academics matches the campus. That being said, they have great supports for some special needs.
