Why is everyone freaking out about milk prices when dairy consumption has fallen off a cliff?

Anonymous
Everyone is going crazy about milk prices but dairy consumption in the us has dropped massively.

In the United States alone, demand for fluid milk has decreased by 26% since 2000.

It's easy way to convey rising costs for families, since families are the ones who (at least stereotypically and I'm guessing factually) buy the most milk.

What a weird post.

I’ve never met or even heard of anyone “freaking out” about milk prices.

26% decline in 21 years doesn’t exactly blow me away. More kinds of drinks, people are more health conscious, etc.

Do you work for Big Milk?

How many people did you see freak out in order to categorize this as “everyone”?

too expensive to consume

Young children still drink a lot of milk, even if adults are less likely to drink milk than they used to be. Typically, young families don’t have unlimited grocery budgets. People are feeling the rising costs of food in general.

Who's freaking out about milk?

Sure. There’s no way reduced consumption could be related to increased price.

Oh, wait….

CNN did a story about inflation, using milk prices as an example. Other outlets picked it up, leading to a buzz in the news about milk prices.

More interesting was that the family CNN interviewed buys 12 gallons of milk a week. I cannot imagine.

They also said milk prices rose from $1.99 to $2.79 which ... I know there are regional differences in pricing, but wow.

Is this your “let them eat cake” moment, OP?

A lot of families are struggling to put healthy food on the table in periods of inflation, and milk is a staple food among children.

Here’s your Out Of Touch medal.

Thank you! I was wondering the same thing, like who drinks milk anymore? Yuck.

Wasn’t the CNN story debunked already?

Yes, it was poor reporting with inadequate fact checking. Milk prices didn’t increase that much.

“The Stotlers may be wrong about the significance of random milk price fluctuations, but their angst over inflation and the general state of the economy is shared by millions of other Americans. “

Indeed, we should totally worry so much more about the prices of almond and cashew milk! Did you see those prices??
Who can even afford that anymore? I might have to...gasp... buy cow milk!

This.
I don't drink milk but my kids do. I also think it's just an example that is relatable to demonstrate the rise in food costs. You could sub almost any other food for milk, prices are going up.
