| We’re not big turkey people so I’m leaning towards a prime rib this year. No extended family will be with us. Just our nuclear family. Anybody else forgo turkey, despite tradition? |
| Growing up in the PacNW we traditionally did salmon or other wild caught fish. So not actually forgoing tradition, I guess. |
|
I’ve done salmon, I’ve done Cornish hens, I’ve done takeout Chinese food — heavily focused on seafood.
This is a good opportunity to start your own traditions. If everyone in your family likes prime rib, that sounds great — and much better than eating a meal that no one really likes because…..Why? |
| We do a honey baked ham |
Agree. I dislike most Thanksgiving foods so if it is just our nuclear family, we do food that feels "special" to us. Prime rib sounds great. We've also done restaurants with a bigger group where the traditionalists can get their Thanksgiving turkey and the rest of us can order other things. No need to choke down a bunch of food you don't enjoy in the name of "tradition." |
| We do duck and lobster |
| We do seafood hotpot style. |
| Hot take - turkey is the weak link in Thanksgiving dinner, and very few people really like it. You know how I know that? Very few people make it the other 364 days of the year, despite the fact that it's both inexpensive and easy. |
| Blasphemy! The only American holiday I like and I call it a Turkey Holiday! |
Quoted for truth |
I love cranberry sauce. I only make it once a year despite being cheap and easy. |
| My family always did roast chicken because we liked it better. Exactly once we did turkey and it coincided with the year both kids brought the flu home from school so we stick with chicken |
| Kung pao chicken |
Roasting a turkey is straightforward, but it is not “easy.” The bulk of the bird alone when you rinse it and prep it, and when you let it rest and carve it necessitates effort that isn’t there when you roast a smaller bird, like a chicken. Some things are essentially simple to do, but not “easy.” |

We've done beef roast, ham and ordered lobster or duck (from Chinese restaurant).
Not big on turkey, but my kids always request both mashed potato and sweet potato casserole for Tgiving. |
