ECNL moving to school year not calendar

Our ecnl director encouraged us not to book flights for national playoffs for this year until after the ecnl coaching symposium, in case there was a change to the ecnl playoff structure

Great job ECNL! Looking forward to it.

So ECNL teams will be created as SY teams and play up in a BY system for 2025/26?

Smart move. Use one year to figure out the team and adjust to SY before the playoff.

This seems like it would be a very smart move by them.

I believe the clubs have the flexibility to mix BY and SY for the regular season. If playoff next year will use SY, then it gives club incentive to build SY team during the regular season. Anyway the playoff is after ECNL tryout which is already SY based next year.

So basically they will go SY a year early? My daughter is a q3 looking to move to ECNL. So instead of playing with the 2012s (BY) she would try out for next year on the 2013s (her school year) who will be playing a year up? Or would she still play on the 2012s (BY) team?

When will they inform all the clubs that already formed BY teams at tryouts?

Have you ever watched teams that are supposed to be 9v9 play 11v11? It's awful imagine bunch ball but the players get tired bunchballing it up and down the larger 11v11 field.

Even the smallest amount of tactics + passing will win games. But this isn't how players think at that age. Which is why they're supposed to be playing 9v9.

Any club has the ability to adjust between February 2025 and May 2026. Cmon

Kids playing on top teams are ready for 11v11 at the end of U11 (at the age of 10) and many clubs in this area have them playing up in their U12 anyway. So if ECNL does this and has teams play up it only helps top players play full field sooner.

Where did this info come from?

Any updates on how school year will be defined?

From a developmental standpoint, this is a bad move. Kids should play smaller sided games for as long as possible. When you increase the field and number of players, each players touches the ball less. In Europe there is a big movement to keep kids playing 7v7 and 9v9 for longer periods of time to encourage development. If ECNL does this, it would only be for financial benefit not a developmental benefit.

Technically it is only one age group that is affected by playing up on a full field and only for one year earlier to make a smoother transition to SY. I doubt this can be argued as bad for their development.
