After-school share care cost

Anonymous
Another mother in my DD’s third grade class is a preschool teacher during the day and is interested in picking up my DD and hers from school at 3 and doing homework, snacks, play until I get home at 6PM. We’ve already gone through two flakey after-school sitters so this feels optimal for me. We were paying the flakey sitters $25 an hour. What should be be expecting this nanny’s quote to be considering she will also be bringing her daughter to our house?

The girls get along really well, btw, and are friends in school. The teacher/sitting will drive both girls home in her car.

Thank you!

If you pay the sitter 25 an hour, then that’s 375 a week which is crazy to me. We pay 400 a month.

You hit the fricking gold standard by getting a teacher, OP! IME, they are the only ones reliable. And a another class mother?!

Pay whatever she says!!

It’s illegal, PP, to pay a babysitter by the month! You aren’t even paying minimum wage!!

It’s aftercare, not a sitter. My point is, I would just do aftercare not a babysitter

Oh, right. OP here and we aren’t interested in aftercare. Thanks anyway.

$15 an hour? It is a nanny-share and half $25 is $12.50 so $15 feel fair.

I think $20. $15 seems low. That’s what I pay teens I expect little from. It’s significant hassle/work for her so it needs to be worth her while.

That is less than minimum wage

Ask for her a weekly quote, pay whatever she asks/don't try to negotiate, and just do it.

$15 isn’t less than minimum wage.

She may do $15 if you guarantee the hours. Three hours a day x 5 is 45 so $225 a week regardless of whether your kid or her kid is sick or you go on vacation. Also talk to her about school holidays! So great they’re in the same school.

It sounds like you need a day care, not preschool open till 6. Normally I'd say no you don't need to pay as much but in this situation you absolutely need to pay as she's transporting your child and for stability. You will have a very difficult time finding someone to transport your child and then just for a few hours so you need to pay a premium for fewer hours.

It is in DC, and several other jurisdictions.
