I know there used to be a thread with the SYA/CYA merger but it is locked now.
How are things at Valor? We were SYA and moved out of the area, but are moving back soon. We had multiple boys playing and the experience was okay. How is it now? Are the teams competitive? When we left there was a lot of talk about the new CCL, ECNL, ECNL-RL etc. How is the new CCL? |
Oh, boy. It’s like the Vlasic Bat Signal just illuminated in the night sky. Good questions, though, not a lot is said about the new version of CCL and how that is going... |
Because it’s not good. Better players on girls side will continue to leave for ECNL opportunities. |
No matter how awful your kids play, they will find a team for them and cash your check, so it’s a sure thing. |
to be fair, this is every big program. Always willing to add another pitiful team to the bottom of the list. |
Our experience primarily is with the lower-end teams across both genders but different age groups, and those teams struggle to be competitive from what I've witnessed. |
Ha! So Valor is the Loudoun of Fairfax/PW area? |
The second 2011 team and the second and third 2010 and 2012 teams on the boys side took every kid who tried out. |
Top 2012 boys team at Valor is pretty good - they can hang with a number of the best teams in the area but not on level of say Bethesda or SYC. DS with another club who's played them. |
The top teams of most places are decent. Its the quality of the 2nd, 3rd and 4th (!) teams at Valor that are basically rec level. |
OP has boys not girls. |
Corrected it for you: Ha! So Valor is like every other travel club ever formed. |
So what would people suggest besides Valor for young players that are in geographical areas where CYA and SYA play? Is it an ok place to start out for a first experience with travel soccer? We're still in rec but it's becoming clear that our son is definitely better than a lot of kids out there and he loves it. He is getting frustrated playing with kids who don't seem to care or don't have much experience (I'm guessing some sat out all of last year due to Covid whereas we let our son play last spring). I think he could benefit from some professional (meaning not parent) coaching next year. But I don't want to spend a bunch of money on a crappy product, so if there's somewhere else in western Fairfax County that is better I'd be interested in hearing about it. |
Oh, everywhere is the same. Go with the closest place. If your son should be in travel, he will make the top team. The rest aren’t worth paying for. |
Make the top team, learn the landscape, switch later. |
