| New to DC. What type of winter gear do we need? I know West coast and Midwest winters, as well as upstate NY but no idea how to prep for winter here! |
| Snow pants, Jacket, Gloves, hat, scarf and boots - can be hiking or snow. And, a pair of good socks. |
LOL. It snows here once every few years. A 5th grader in a scarf? LOL. |
| Based on what my kid and his friends wear: shorts and a hoodie. |
I’ll consider myself lucky if I can get my 5th grader to wear a long sleeve shirt. He will not wear a coat. Hoodie unless sledding. Gloves for sledding. Maybe we will get lucky with snow, but the last two years they were sledding in mud and ice. |
| I have a 4th grader and she will wear a coat and gloves as far as to school or whatever. I buy snow pants and snow boots from the thrift store that she will wear if we get snow. |

Layers. If your kid will actually wear outerwear, look for a waterproof shell that can be used as a raincoat in moderate temps, or a snow jacket when layered over fleece or sweatshirts in our increasingly-rare snow events.
Otherwise a warm hoodie is the standard for most kids. If you can pick up rain/snow boots or waterproof gloves from a thrift store or on sale at Target, that's great, but I wouldn't spend a ton of money on something they'll likely outgrow before they ever get to use them. You don't say how old your kids are, but for younger elementary kids, something like the 3-in-1 jackets from Land's End is a great choice. The fleece lining is fine for most days, or the waterproof outer shell on rainy/slushy ones, and for the few cold weeks of the year (usually January or February), they can wear them together. But by 5th or 6th grade, my daughter wouldn't have been caught dead in one, and she's not really a trend-conscious kid. I think it was mainly the colors that seemed babyish. |
(sorry, you did say how old in your title!) |
| Girl or boy? My girl has no problem wearing a winter coat with hat and gloves but she also has a heavier fleece that gets worn a lot on the warmer days during the winter. I do buy snow pants and snow boots but we also go skiing a couple times a year so they mostly get worn on those trips. I just get them from Target and always buy a size bigger so I can get a year or two out of them. We're lucky if we get one good snow that has the kids outside playing in the snow and sledding. I've noticed some of the boys in her class resist the cold weather gear more than the girls. |
| You need snow pants and boots if it snows and they go sledding. But some winters it doesn’t snow much so don’t spend a lot. My kids wear a warm winter coat and sneakers most winter days, with gloves and hat on the coldest days in Jan/Feb. |
