Fresh direct — selection way down

Anonymous
Anyone else having trouble with selection with fresh direct lately? It seems like the dc selection is now way different from the NY market (whereas it was same before). No selection for fish, cheese, prepped meats, no more meal kits, soups and salad selection is abysmal etc. I looked at the web version and it seems like it is just problem with DC (web shows everything available as before vs my app which knows my address). I know they were recently bought by a large grocery chain and wonder if they moved to a more limited warehouse for our market (as opposed to a larger supply chain issue which I would be willing to wait out). Selection seems similar to Giant now, so I’m not certain why I would stay with fresh direct.

Where are you guys shopping these days? I feel like Whole Foods went downhill soon after Amazon bought them. Is is back to Giant/Safeway (which is fine for staples but I miss my fancy cheeses, prepped foods etc). *Sigh*I can’t wait for the Wegman’s to open at the old Fannie Mae site.

I use Thrive Market, but obviously not for fresh goods.

Maybe you can pair Thrive Market with Imperfect Foods???

Thanks! I haven’t heard of either of these! I’ll look them up.

No prob. The "store brand" for Thrive is actually surprisingly decent! It's like Costco but you end up saving in the end (if you use it regularly).

Fresh Direct is just terrible now

The company that bought it pretty much admitted they only did so to break into the NYC market where they are weakest. I wouldn't be shocked if the stop FD service entirely in DC as Giant already has a foothold here with their store-based delivery service. They are competing vs themselves otherwise.

I am so frustrated with FD now. I want my annual fee back bc I am not using them at all. I loved their family sized prepared foods and their party platters fir work, school & sports things. They don’t offer those anymore

Yup — this is how I feel now too. It used to be so great!

Ugh. I didn't realize they still had everything for NYC. Maybe they are having trouble staffing drivers to do the runs to DC? I see the merits in the Giant argument, but didn't they purchase them a while ago? And wouldn't that impact NYC too? Agree that it's much less appealing with the limited selection.

Whole Foods seems exactly the same to me.

In this case, it is because Bezos is pushing out outside brands to replace them with 365 store brand.

I was hoping it was a staffing or supply chain issue too. But I starting questioning this when I realized that NYC seems to have the same selection. Also, now we don’t need to finalize the order the evening before (you can change closer to the delivery time or get spots later that day) which makes me think it isn’t a driver issue but that they are using a local warehouse of some sort. Maybe just the giant one, if they are now owned by the same company)?

I’m disproportionately sad by this, I thought I finally had my grocery runs figured out in a really convenient way (first world problems I know). But now I’m back to square one. Does anyone know a good place to get fish or cheese in bethesda or NW DC? Or a good butcher? Or places to order online from?

Never tried it myself, but mercato.com seems to fit the bill for your requirements. All locally sourced.

I've started putting in product requests for all the things I used to order. Maybe if lots of people request they will bring back some of the things.
