I’m considering sending my 15mo old to Montessori school but since toddlers that age can’t wear masks, I’m wondering if I should just stick it out with a nanny for a while longer. What would you do? |
I've got news for you...my 3.5 year old "can" wear a mask but it doesn't seem to stop cold viruses from tearing through her classroom. Point is, if you're that concerned about keeping your child from germs, you're going to need to avoid daycare for quite a bit longer. |
+1 |
But is it worse sans-mask? |
Young children have been going to daycare throughout the pandemic. The risk isn’t zero but it’s low. As long as the teachers are masking I think it’s probably very low risk but I don’t know your tolerance for risk.
My daycare teachers are all vaxxed and wear masks. |
If you don’t have weeks and weeks of sick, PTO and vacation time - keep the nanny. My three year old has been out with three different colds since mid-August (total 12 days). If I didn’t have a nanny, that would have been more vacation time then I have left for this year! The colds are vicious this season!! And needing to go to the doc for a covid test every time is a pain and expense. |
Of course he can wear a mask. Put it on and keep it on. |
I would just send him. I don't think masks actually matter in an environment where children are inside together for hours at a time, plus removing their masks for meals and naps. It's more important that the facilities staff are vaccinated (and that the kids are coming from a community of vaccinated parents) and that the school has good health screening procedures in place and clear policies about when kids must stay home with symptoms and whether a negative Covid test is required to return to school. The masks are basically theater and the other stuff are the meaningful precautions.
- Someone whose 4 year old has attended Montessori (in a mask) during Covid, with unmasked kids under the age of 2 |
No. It is unsafe. My Montessori school has a toddler classroom with many under-2s. They seem fine. Vaccinated, masked adults with a lot of outdoor time means little spread. If he is ready or it works for you, go ahead. |
To clarify, a one year wearing a mask is unsafe. Preschool is safe. |
Nope. Unsafe and unhealthy. Seek mental help if you think 15 month olds can/should wear masks. |
